It is the Constant Observer’s responsibility to provide constant observation to patients as directed by the RN. It is expected that safety issues will be monitored and reported to the nursing caregivers. The Constant Observer is utilized to sit with patients who are experiencing the following situations including but not limited to: suicide potential, potential to harm self or others, restless and or confused. The Constant Observer is to maintain continuous visual observation of the patient per BSMH policy.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Reports to the nursing staff.Follows hospital dress code which includes wearing a name badge.Follows hospital sitter guidelines.Identifies signs of patient distress

For behavioral restraints or seclusion, must also understand the following:

Causes of the threatening behavior exhibited by the patientsSometimes this behavior can be related to a medical conditionHow staff behaviors can affect patient behaviorsDe-escalation, mediation, physical intervention and other techniquesHow to recognize physical distress in pts. in restraints or seclusionRecognize when to seek staff assistance

When there is not a need for a safety companion:

May Complete hourly rounding on unitMay Assist in transportation of patientsMay float to other units for continuous observation

EDUCATION, SPECIALIZED AND/OR TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

High School Graduate or GED equivalentMust be 18 years or olderAll sitters must maintain yearly training requirements.American Heart Association BLS/CPR Certification
