Minnesota Power is seeking an Inspector II to join its Engineering Services team. The role involves providing field support to the construction and project management group, focusing on substation utility work, transmission projects, dam inspections, and opportunities to work on solar, wind, battery storage, and HVDC projects. Responsibilities include inspecting construction projects for adherence to specifications, performing construction staking and monitoring surveys, ensuring compliance with standards, and avoiding project delays. Work is conducted on location at project sites.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Under moderate supervision, inspect a wide variety of construction projects for adherence to specifications.
+ Effective performance required to assure that surveys and inspections comply with accepted standards, contract work meets specifications, and all is conducted to avoid delay in project completion.
+ Inspect construction projects such as service centers, generating stations, substations, transmission lines, etc., to assure completion of work in accordance with contract specifications; works with design engineers to resolve problems arising in field. Includes inspection of earthwork, underground utilities, roads, concrete foundations and structures masonry, steel structures, building components, and coatings.
+ Conduct a variety of surveys such as land, topographical, line and structure locations.
+ Perform related office duties such as verification of invoices, costs of material, labor, equipment, and other charges to assure conformance with contract terms; analyzes construction costs and records for future use in estimates and specifications.
+ Assist the project team in executing large and small scale engineering and construction projects related to electrical generating facilities (thermal, hydro, wind, solar), substations, and office facilities in accordance with Minnesota Power standards.
+ Verify the project Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP) are in compliance with documented inspections of the site “Best Management Practices (BMP) for sediment and erosion control.
+ Arrange for clearances or outages for contractors working near energized equipment.
+ Investigate landowner complaints of alleged damages resulting from construction activities.
+ Compile survey notes and engineering data; documents “as-built” data for drawing revision and future reference; maintains both records of activities in a daily construction log, and reinforcing-steel and anchor bolt inspection forms.
+ Maintain up-to-date knowledge through professional reading and attendance at seminars.
+ Perform duties with exposure to all types of weather conditions and construction site conditions including energized equipment; frequent use of motor vehicle. Assignments may require extended overnight stays of several days, weeks, or months.
REQUIRED EDUCATION:
+ High school diploma or equivalent PLUS two year vocational certificate in survey and civil engineering technology or equivalent.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
+ Four years or more related experience and demonstrated technical expertise and communication skills.
+ Knowledge and skill in the following areas preferred:
+ Surveying techniques
+ Survey equipment use
+ Construction practices and techniques
+ Interpersonal communication
+ Mathematics - including trigonometry
+ Land subdivision
+ Microsoft office (Word, Excel, etc.)
+ Civil 3D/AutoCAD
+ Survey CAD software (Trimble Business Center)
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
+ This position will report regularly in person to Duluth, MN and requires regular travel to different Minnesota Power/ALLETE facilities and project sites.
+ Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with the ability to obtain and maintain a DOT Medical Certificate.
+ Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP) certification as a Site Manager preferred
+ Strong interpersonal and communication skills required to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
+ Assignments may require after hours and out of town travel and extended overnight stays of several days, weeks, or months may be required.
+ Duties performed with exposure to all types of weather conditions and construction site conditions including energized equipment.
+ This position may be subject to assessment of skills, job match and/or aptitude.
BENEFITS:
+ The expected hourly compensation range for this position is $31.30 – $39.40. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will vary depending on relevant knowledge, skills, training, experience, and market conditions.
