Summary:
Barr Engineering Co. seeks a talented, curious, and highly productive writer and editor to lead the development of project examples and other technical content highlighting Barr’s expertise and impact. As a content marketing specialist, you will collaborate with engineers, scientists, and technical staff members to develop engaging summaries of key projects for publication on barr.com and use in various marketing materials. You will play a central role in prioritizing and organizing content-marketing plans based on business priorities, and you’ll coordinate and track the Communications team’s efforts supporting these goals. In addition, you’ll work closely with leaders in Business Development, IT, and Communications to drive process improvements and leverage technologies such as artificial intelligence to improve efficiency in content development.
As a member of Barr’s growing, highly engaged Communications group, you’ll have the opportunity to explore your interests and create content for a wide variety of mediums, including thought-leadership and employee spotlight blog articles, social media posts, videos, and internal and external news articles. You will toggle seamlessly between support roles and lead roles on projects and assignments, which is typical within Barr’s collaborative Communications team.
Your exceptional writing will influence buying decisions, build brand affinity, and engage target audiences. The complex, highly technical nature of Barr’s work aligns well with a strong background in technical writing or science writing, or experience in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) services sector.
Responsibilities Include:
Drafting and editing project examples for barr.com
Coordinating and tracking project example development across the company
Driving process improvements for content development, including through AI
Writing and editing engaging content in a range of formats to support Barr’s content-marketing goals
Maintaining a consistent voice and tone that aligns with Barr’s brand and editorial standards
Collaborating with colleagues to identify priority content needs and develop plans to meet them
Drafting content for publication on barr.com
Learning Barr’s content management system (CMS) to publish finalized materials on barr.com
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in English, communications, marketing, or a related field
Five years of related experience writing persuasive content that incorporates technical or complex information
Ability to communicate highly technical topics to general audiences
Superb written communication, editing, proofreading, and interviewing skills
Attentiveness to details and deadlines
Strong organizational and project-management skills
Ability to learn and manage technology solutions that improve efficiency
Advanced ability to serve as a strategic communications advisor and lead through influence
Experience or ability to create content in various formats, including videos, social media posts, web content, and feature articles
Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Proficiency with MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel software
Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship from Barr, now or in the future
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in technical, scientific, or AEC writing
Technical editing experience
Digital marketing experience
Experience working in content management systems (e.g., WordPress)
Experience with Microsoft Office 365 platforms, including SharePoint and Microsoft Teams, and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, such as Deltek Vantagepoint
Knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, Prezi, and/or MS Project software
Advanced document-design and graphic-design skills
Photography experience
A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position can be based out of Barr’s offices in Minneapolis or Duluth, Minnesota.
Compensation:
The anticipated base salary range for this position is $67,000—78,000/year. This position is classified as exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. Barr has a “no retained earnings” model and distributes all its profit to our employees through our bonus plan and ESOP.
