Requirements The Georgetown-Howard Center for Medical Humanities and Health Justice (MHHJ) (http://www.mhhj.org) is a dynamic venture between Georgetown and Howard Universities, funded by the Mellon Foundation. The Center serves as a research and educational hub converging students, faculty, postdocs, and community partners to apply medical humanities toward advancing health equity in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. The Content Writer/Editor will develop and curate a dynamic content library that advances MHHJ's mission to bridge academic research with public health impact. This position requires mastery of various content formats - from scholarly articles to engaging blog posts - to effectively communicate how the critical medical humanities can address health inequities. The ideal candidate will amplify our center's voice and visibility through compelling, clear copy across multiple platforms. They will be an agile writer who can adapt their voice and style to create engaging content that resonates with our diverse audiences, while maintaining consistent quality and messaging. As a critical member of the MHHJ team, the Content Writer will ensure our academic expertise reaches both scholarly and public audiences effectively. This role requires agility in moving between technical and accessible writing styles while maintaining consistent quality across all communications channels. The successful candidate will help shape our thought leadership, improve existing content, and develop new approaches to showcase the Center’s unique approach to addressing healthcare challenges through the tools of the medical humanities. Duties include but are not limited to: + Collaborate with MHHJ faculty, staff, and fellows to generate content ideas that align with our academic and public engagement goals. + Create compelling long-form content that translates complex academic concepts for diverse audiences. + Support the development of landing pages and digital content that showcase our research impact and community partnerships. + Write press releases and media materials to amplify our scholars' work and center initiatives. + Repurpose academic content for different platforms and audiences while maintaining intellectual rigor. + Coordinate with faculty and researchers to ensure accurate representation of their work. + Develop a wide range of communications materials, including formal reports, journal articles, marketing materials, fact sheets, and blog posts. + Copyedit written products for content, coverage, clarity, and voice consistency, recommending revisions and improvements to editorial standards as appropriate. + Complete qualitative analyses of textual data, such as public comments, responses to Requests for Information, and survey responses. + Identify gaps between production requirements and the content that has been developed and work with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to improve their content. + Stay informed of the latest event related trends and best practices. Work Interactions Reporting to the co-Executive Directors, the Content Writer/Editor will be adept at translating complex concepts and synthesizing diverse perspectives into written products accessible to readers with a wide range of backgrounds. Researchers and writers with a background in the humanities and social sciences are ideally suited to provide this support, particularly those who have experience with interdisciplinary collaboration. The Content Writer/Editor will interact with all fellows, faculty, staff, and students internal and external stakeholders, as well as community partners. The ideal candidate will be able to create content based on these interactions and research. This individual is responsible for articulating MHHJ’s strategic priorities both internally and externally, to promote MHHJ’’s commitment to supporting the community to address health injustices through the medical humanities. Work hours are generally flexible, to allow time for scheduled evening; after hours, and weekend work will be required for certain limited activities (e.g. event support).Requirements and Qualifications + Bachelor's degree in the humanities, communications, or the social sciences + 3-5 years of relevant experience + Proven writing and editing experience for health- or humanities- related topics + Strong interest and commitment to the mission and work of MHHJ + 2+ years experience in drafting, editing, publication, and disseminating process of blogs, articles, and/or book chapters + Outstanding interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills with ability to interact in a positive manner with a diverse communities to build meaningful partnerships and navigate sensitive issues + Meticulous attention to detail with strong administrative judgment and problem-solving skills + Ability to understand, synthesize, and conceptualize input and requests from multiple stakeholders + Experience writing for both technical and lay audiences + Proficiency and experience with Microsoft Word (templates, styles, and layout functions) and Google Suite (Gmail, Google Calendar, Drive, etc.), Adobe, and citation management software Preferred Requirements and Qualifications + Masters degree + Experience managing and driving long-term projects across varied stakeholders and shifting priorities + Minimum 3 years of demonstrated writing experience across multiple platforms, which may include: Journalistic writing for news outlets, magazines, or digital publications; Copy generation for organizations, institutions, or companies; Feature writing and long-form narrative pieces; and Translation of complex topics for general audiences + Portfolio demonstrating versatility in writing styles and ability to adapt tone for different audiences and outlets + Experience managing and driving long-term projects across varied stakeholders + Proven track record of editorial management and document oversight, including: Adherence to different style guides (MLA, AP, Chicago, etc.), Brand voice consistency, and Grammar and usage expertise + Experience writing for academic or research institutions a plus Work Mode Designation This position has been designated as Hybrid - 2 days. Pay Range: The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is: $47,586.00 - $87,558.13 Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
