Role Overview:

As the Controller, you will be responsible for collaborating with the Treasurer and CFO on financial accounting and reporting, taxation and regulatory reporting.  The Controller collaborates with their teams to align resources with the organization’s priorities. The individual collaborates with key leaders across the company and ensures that their teams achieve objectives in a manner consistent with company values.  The Controller strives to provide an outstanding workplace culture that maximizes employee engagement and supports employee development.

 

Responsibilities:

Treasury Functions

Investments:

Coordinate with Treasurer and CFO on cash availability for investments. Communicate with investment managers to process Board requests. Ensure investments align with the Investment Policy and record them accurately.

Cash Management:

Manage banking access and arrangements for the Company. Assist Treasurer and CFO with cash balances and cashflow needs. Oversee broker loan portfolio, including interest rate adjustments.

Financial Reporting

Prepare and review financial statements and regulatory reports. Ensure compliance with accounting standards and support internal audits. Work with external auditors for year-end reporting and tax returns. Administer taxes, commissions, and payroll filings.

Reinsurance

Manage reinsurance transactions and reporting per company policy. Collaborate on annual reinsurance submissions.

Regulatory Reporting

Assist in preparing and filing regulatory compliance documents.

Human Resources

Support hiring, onboarding, and mentoring of staff. Ensure cross-training and lead performance management for direct reports.

 

 Experience:

 People Leadership

The Controller must be an experienced leader, skilled at fostering a positive culture and developing team members for future growth.

Communication & Emotional Intelligence

Strong communication skills are essential, ensuring alignment during change. The Controller must be emotionally intelligent, addressing concerns and relationships effectively.

Problem Solving & Analytical Ability

The Controller should proactively identify and resolve issues, viewing problems as growth opportunities for both the organization and employees.

Strategic & Future Planning

 A deep understanding of industry trends and strategic planning is preferred, along with the ability to execute long-term plans.

Experience

7+ years in accounting and insurance financial reporting. Dynamics Great Plains / Dynamics 365 Accounting Software Experience. Project management experience. IFRS 17 Experience is desirable. Experience with financial statements, budgeting, and regulatory filings. Familiarity with various business functions is beneficial. Leadership experience is required.

 Education

 A CPA designation is required. Other post secondary education is considered an asset.
