Position Overview:
The Boating Intelligence (BI) Design Lab is seeking a highly motivated Controls & Dynamics Intern. Brunswick’s autonomy and advanced driver assistance programs aim to make boating more accessible and minimize stress on the water. It is critical to provide users with features that inspire confidence and perform in a variety of conditions.
In this role, you will help research and model marine vessel dynamics and help grow our simulation tools while also develop and deploy control algorithms for autonomous maneuvering of the vessel along with trajectory prediction capabilities.

Essential Functions:
Create and/or integrate modular, dynamic models of a vessel and its components.
Utilize experimental data and other resources to validate models.
Integrate dynamics models with existing simulation tools.
Research and implement control algorithms to guide the vessel along a predetermined path.
Collaborate with engineers and designers to create a user interface that can help new boaters execute difficult maneuvers.
Interface with sensor and actuator hardware on a test boat to validate algorithm performance.
Write and maintain relevant documentation.

Required Qualifications:
To be considered for the internship, candidates must be authorized to work in the United States immediately, without the need for sponsorship, now or in the future.
Current enrollment in an MS or PhD Engineering program at an accredited university of good standing. Focus on Mechanical, Aerospace, or Electrical Engineering.
Delivers quality technical reports, presentations, and documentation
Proficient in Python programming languages.
Preferred Qualifications:
Currently enrolled in MS or PhD program in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Electrical Engineering at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana.
Interest and experience in robotics path planning and model-predictive control.
Interest and experience in dynamic systems modeling and system identification.
Experience with utilizing ML models to develop system dynamics from experimental data.
Experience with ROS2 and C++.
Working Conditions:
Learning Opportunities: Our internships are designed to provide hands-on experience in a professional setting. You will work alongside experienced professionals and get a chance to apply your academic knowledge to real-world tasks.
Project Work: The work environment is supportive, collaborative, and conducive to learning. Interns typically work on specific projects or tasks that contribute to the organization’s goals. This may range from supporting larger projects to handling smaller, individual assignments.
Hours: During summer, interns are expected to work 40 hours in person at the lab each week. Interns must work at least 8 hours in person at the lab each week during the fall and spring terms. You may work up to 20 hours maximum.
Feedback and Performance Reviews: As an intern, you will receive feedback and performance reviews throughout your assignment. We value the importance for interns to understand their progress and areas for improvement.
Responsibility: Interns at BI Design Lab are expected to manage their own schedules, set goals, and seek feedback for their professional development.
Travel Requirements:
There may be opportunities to travel for testing guidance and control strategies at a remote facility. Although travel is encouraged if your schedule allows, travel is never mandatory, and performance evaluations are not based on the ability to travel.
The anticipated pay range for this position is $23.00 - $29.00 per hour. The actual hourly rate offered will depend on multiple factors including year in school, degree, job-related knowledge/skills, relevant experience, business needs, and geographic location.
At Brunswick, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top end of the salary range for their role. Compensation decisions are dependent upon the specifics of the candidate’s qualifications and the business context.
