The Controls Engineer is responsible for the design, specification, development, integration, and commissioning of controls systems for New Millennium equipment and automation projects. The ideal candidate will demonstrate innovative ideas, adoption of new technologies, and ownership of project work. They will also demonstrate proficiency in problem-solving, troubleshooting, and de-bugging PLC, HMI, and vision systems in support of our NMBS facilities.
Responsibilities
· Design, develop, and execute complex control systems integration projects with vendors and NM facilities
· Prepare specifications and requirements in accordance with NM Control Standards
· Develop panel designs and layouts, schematic diagrams, and control system drawings including BOM creation
· Ability to produce system designs, PLC, HMI, and SCADA programs and configurations
· Initiate and support multiple projects and implementations of varying sizes and degrees of complexity
· Integration of legacy systems (PLC/Controllers, Drives, AC and DC motors)
· Ensure that projects are planned and executed in a timely and efficient manner and routinely report progress
· Provide technical guidance during build, testing, and commissioning of new or modified machines and systems
· Program, configure, test, and commission PLC and HMI-based control systems
· Simulate, test, and troubleshoot issues with controls systems and programs, document, and report findings
· Investigate manufacturing and production issues for NM sites, must be able to solve issues remotely
· Prepare technical manuals, work instructions, training materials, and troubleshooting guides required to support production activities
· Support Preventive Maintenance Planning and Coordination by ensuring all PM plans and tasks are in place to ensure effective maintenance
QualificationsSkills Required:
Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Controls Engineer BS in ME, EE, Automation, or Related Field Demonstrated ability to write and troubleshoot PLC code, HMI programming, and robotics programming. Ability to create systems designs and documentation in addition to maintaining systems developed by others Knowledge and understanding of automation vision systems (Keyence, Cognex, Banner) Strong analytical skills and ability to solve problems and communicate effectively with little guidance Proficient computer skills in Word and Excel, and CAD Excellent oral and written communication skills Works well in team environment
Skills Preferred:
Mechanically inclined, hands-on individual Experience with Allen-Bradley and Fanuc systems Steel and fabrication industry experience that includes welding, forming, cutting, and rolling technologies
