Controls Engineer

An Instrumentation Technician / Controls Engineer is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing various industrial instrumentation and control systems, including electrical, mechanical, and electronic equipment, ensuring the proper functioning of manufacturing processes by monitoring and adjusting critical parameters like temperature, pressure, and flow rates through calibration and system adjustments; often requiring reading and interpreting technical diagrams, schematics, and operating manuals to diagnose issues and implement repairs.  

Key responsibilities may include: 

Installation and setup: 

Installing new instrumentation and control equipment according to specifications, including wiring, mounting, and configuring.  

Maintenance and calibration: 

Performing routine maintenance checks, calibrating instruments to ensure accurate readings, and replacing worn or faulty components.  

Troubleshooting and repair: 

Diagnosing malfunctions in control systems, identifying root causes of issues, and repairing or replacing faulty components.  

Data analysis: 

Interpreting process data from control systems to identify trends and potential problems.  

System programming: 

Programming PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) and other control system components to adjust process parameters as needed.  

Documentation: 

Maintaining detailed records of maintenance activities, calibration logs, and system modifications.  

Safety compliance: 

Adhering to safety protocols when working with hazardous equipment and chemicals.  

Required skills and knowledge: 

Technical expertise: 

Strong understanding of electrical, electronic, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.  

Instrumentation knowledge: 

Familiarity with various types of industrial instrumentation like pressure transducers, flow meters, temperature sensors, and level gauges.  

Control system understanding: 

Knowledge of PLC programming, SCADA systems, and other automation technologies.  

 

 

Troubleshooting skills: 

Ability to diagnose complex system issues through logical analysis and troubleshooting techniques.  

Blueprint reading: 

Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams.  

Computer literacy: 

Proficiency in using computer-based tools for system monitoring, configuration, and data analysis.
