Job purpose
The BorgWarner Arden campus offers two world class technical centers and a cutting-edge manufacturing facility that designs and produces turbos and fan drives for the automotive industry. The Arden campus offers a multitude of career opportunities and is in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina.
This position will focus on the controls development including modeling, design, simulation, and hands-on functional work. Communication and collaboration with a team of engineers focusing on system controls for motors, valves, and accessory systems will be core. Experience with controls simulation, motors, and powertrain management hardware will also be necessary.
The Controls Engineer position within this group is primarily responsible for system controls development. The position will also be responsible for guiding and specifying the Software requirements including functional safety aspects for the eLine systems. Close collaboration with a global team will be necessary so that the Software evolves into system-level controls and ultimately real hardware.
Key responsibilities
+ Assist in debugging through established problem solving techniques and debug on bench.
+ Interface with Systems engineering to ensure software requirements are documented appropriately and analyze prior to software design and implementation.
+ Guide implementation of new electronics, sensors, and components into mechatronic systems.
+ Understands requirement to generate controls implementations, and system models.
+ Ensure document traceability from requirements through test cases.
+ Use of data acquisition systems over CCP/XCP (e.g.INCA, ATi,Vector) for calibration and debugging. Build Simulink Control models for new products in a manner appropriate for test engineers.
+ Follow the V model for software development
+ Work as part of a global development team.
+ Communicates and enforces safe work procedures.
+ Identifies and closes safety issues (suggestions, inspection and investigation findings) and their corrective actions.
+ Development and support turbocharger electric high speed motor technology. This includes application selection guidance, validation, controller tuning, and system trouble shooting.
+ Electronic understanding from a performance, hardware, and microprocessor software standpoint. This includes the ability to use and interpret LIN, SENT, CAN and PWM communication protocols.
+ Performs other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.
+ Understands and adheres to current quality and control policies.
+ Understands and adheres to current health, safety, and environmental policies.
+ Work with supply chain personnel to develop and evaluate external vendors, and to identify alternative parts in support of supply issues and obsolescence concerns.
What we’re looking for
Required:
+ Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or similar engineering field.
+ Fundamentally sound electrical engineering knowledge with the ability to adapt to new environments.
+ Self-starter that can lead projects with minimal oversight.
+ Ability to coordinate with engineering development with individuals in multiple locations / time zones.
+ Ability to work on project teams as a technical representative and possesses good communication skills.
+ Knowledge/Experience with MATLAB-Simulink including state flow.
+ Knowledge/Experience of control theory
+ Knowledge of motors & drives, control system fundamentals, and wiring systems.
+ Knowledge of high temperature instrumentation for measuring flow, pressure, temperature, imbalance, rotor motion, and vibration.
+ Familiarity with electrical test equipment including oscilloscopes, power analyzers, and multimeters as well as a basic understanding of electrical safety.
+ Proficient with Microsoft office products — Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project
+ Experience writing technical statements of work (SOW).
Preferred:
+ MSEE with 5+ years design and development experience.
+ Proficiency with CAN and support tools preferred
+ Proficiency in calibration methods and tools is preferred.
+ Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to coordinate testing.
+ Understanding of the challenges of applying electronic components to harsh applications, principal failure modes, means to mitigate these, and the methods for validation.
+ Broad background in engineering technical disciplines that include vibration, heat transfer, stress, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, controls, magnetics and EMI/EMC shielding.
+ Six Sigma and Functional Safety experience
