Controls Engineer II
Responsibilities Make an impact Develop, program, and troubleshoot complex PLC-based control systems using either Siemens (STEP 7 Classic and TIA Portal) OR Allen-Bradley (ControlLogix and Studio 5000) software, with a focus on optimizing performance and functionality for both new installations and retrofit projects on existing customer equipment.  Develop and maintain HMI applications to provide intuitive operator interfaces and comprehensive system monitoring, adapting existing HMI's to new functionalities in case of retrofits. Integrate various industrial automation components, including sensors, actuators, motors, drives, and safety devices, into new and existing control systems, with a particular focus on upgrading legacy systems at customer sites. Configure, optimize, and troubleshoot industrial fieldbus communication networks (ProfiBus, ProfiNet, EtherNet/IP) and TCP/IP-based protocols to ensure reliable data exchange between devices, especially when integrating new components into older networks. Lead the implementation and commissioning of control system upgrades and retrofits on existing customer equipment, ensuring seamless integration with legacy systems and minimal disruption to ongoing operations. Perform thorough testing and validation of control systems, both new and retrofitted, to verify proper functionality, safety compliance, and adherence to performance specifications, especially regarding compatibility with existing customer infrastructure. Monitor control system performance and identify opportunities for optimization to improve efficiency, reduce cycle times, and enhance overall system performance, specifically through targeted upgrades and modernization of existing customer systems Serve as a primary resource for diagnosing and resolving complex control system issues in a timely and efficient manner to minimize production downtime, both remotely and on-site at customer locations. Utilize advanced troubleshooting techniques, diagnostic tools, and software debugging features to identify root causes of failures in PLC logic, HMI applications, communication networks, and hardware components, particularly in the context of legacy systems and retrofitted equipment. Analyze system performance data, including cycle times, error logs, and network traffic, to identify potential problems and implement preventative measures, paying special attention to issues that may arise from integrating new technology with older systems. Develop and implement strategies for remote troubleshooting and diagnostics to support operations across multiple customer locations or during off-hours.  Application Requirements What you need to succeed 5-7 years of experience in technical environment inclusive of strong electrical/mechanical troubleshooting Ability to troubleshooting complex electromechanical systems using PLC software to localize issues Ability to read and modify PLC code written in multiple different languages Knowledgeable in Siemens Step 7 Classic and TIA Portal with familiarity of their programming languages (Ladder, statement list, and function block diagram) Ability to multi-task and work independently Highly proactive and self-motivated Industrial experience with sound knowledge of electro-mechanical or automation systems Application knowledge of warehouse distribution systems (pallet or tote conveyor, storage and retrieval machines, monorail systems, etc) Experience with AC Variable Frequency Drives and low voltage controls systems Experience programming Variable Frequency Drives from scratch Knowledge of controls programming languages like: Ladder, Statement List, Function Block Diagram, or Structured Text Experience with Siemens Step 7 Classic, Siemens TIA Portal, and/or Allen Bradley/Rockwell Software Excellent verbal/written communication skills Read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings High level of motivation and sound work ethic Customer interaction and problem resolution knowledge Develop how to and work documentation for internal and external review Travel as required to support projects, which may include weekends and some holidays Ability to work in temperature-controlled environments for extended periods to include refrigerated (cooler) and freezer storage areas
