Controls Engineer-Smurfit
MAU is hiring a Controls Engineer for our client. This position is available in Syracuse, NY, St. Paul, MN, and Longview, WA. Candidates may select their preferred location. As a Controls Engineer, you will manage capital projects, support mill reliability initiatives, and provide technical expertise in PLC programming, HMI configuration, and process control systems. This role requires strong project management skills and the ability to coordinate across multiple disciplines to drive operational improvements. (This is a direct-hire opportunity).

Benefits Package Competitive salary: $118,125 – $157,500 (plus annual bonus) Comprehensive health benefits, including medical, dental, and vision 401(k) with company match Paid time off and holidays Career development and growth opportunities Relocation assistance available Shift Information Monday – Friday Standard business hours with some on-call support Career Path Progression from this Position Engineering Manager Senior Project Engineer Maintenance & Reliability Leadership Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field preferred 5+ years of experience in process control engineering, preferably in the paper or manufacturing industry Experience managing capital and expense repair projects General Requirements Strong project management skills, including scope, cost, and schedule management Proficiency in PLC programming, HMI configuration, and industrial automation Ability to troubleshoot and resolve electrical and process control system issues Working knowledge of P&ID drawings, process loop sheets, and electrical schematics Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills Preferred Requirements Experience with power distribution systems (480V – 15KV) Proficiency in configuring and troubleshooting Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) Familiarity with disaster recovery planning for control systems Experience in developing and delivering training for mill personnel Previous experience leading process optimization teams Essential Functions Manage all phases of capital and expense projects from inception to completion Lead the design and implementation of process control systems Perform system upgrades, backups, and troubleshooting of hardware/software issues Support operations and maintenance teams in resolving production-related challenges Ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations Assist in developing training programs for plant personnel Supervisory Responsibility May provide guidance and support to junior engineers and maintenance personnel Work Environment or Working Conditions Responsibilities performed in both office and industrial plant environments Exposure to heat, humidity, and dust typical of a manufacturing setting Requires ability to walk, climb, and lift light-to-moderate loads Physical Demands Ability to work in an industrial environment with exposure to mechanical equipment May require light to moderate lifting, walking, and climbing Must be able to communicate effectively and interpret technical documents Travel Less than 10% travel required
