ABOUT US New York Edge is a non-profit organization and one of the largest providers of school-based afterschool programs in New York City and the metropolitan region serving over 25,000 elementary, middle, and high school students annually. The mission of New York Edge is to help bridge the opportunity gap among students in underinvested communities by providing programs designed to improve academic performance, health and wellness, self-confidence, and leadership skills for success in life. SUMMARY : New York Edge seeks a highly organized, detail oriented, and responsible individual to fill the role of Coordinator of Student Supports. In this full time position you will be responsible for promoting and actively engaging in restorative intervention practices and student support initiatives throughout the school day. This role reports directly to the Community School Director. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES : + Serves as Restorative Justice Coordinator, responding to crisis and de-escalating situations as they arise + Parental communication and support regarding student progress and potential opportunities. + Parent outreach for daily attendance updates + Monitor student progress and assist students in accomplishing personal objectives. + Interact with students throughout the day and afterschool period to observe and support positive growth. + Communicate with students, parents and school leadership on any concerns that may develop. + Provide ongoing mentoring and/or lead in facilitating small group clubs in a supportive learning and engaging environment. + Work hours will be consistent Monday through Friday with potential for some weekend or evening scheduled activities or events. + Work hand-in-hand with the Community School Director in daily program operations and functions. + Provide support for individual students inside and outside of the classroom to enable them to fully participate in activities. + Participate in school governance, community school team meetings, and specialized meetings such as attendance meetings. + Ensure the health, safety and well-being of participants in the program by providing appropriate supervision at all times. + Support the planning and implementation of all activities, including but not limited to learning initiatives, field trips, and culminating performances. + Support with recruitment efforts for events such as creating flyers, posters, and outreach to increase participation + Attend all required trainings. Actively participate in training sessions, designated meetings and special events. + Works closely with the school leaders to expand restorative practices in our school as a way to ensure that all stakeholders feel welcome, needed and heard in our school community, and to empower students to become leaders within the school community + Prepares correspondence, documents, and other forms of written communication for internal and external community outreach purposes. REQUIREMENTS : + Ability to intervene in crisis situations with verbal de-escalation techniques + Must be capable of accessing and transmitting information using a computer + Experience communicating and supporting families using workshops, family interaction and intervention skills. + Prior experience in school setting and interaction with students, parents, and school staff + Prior experience mentoring students and leading classroom instruction + Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds + Commitment to continuous professional growth (e.g. professional development, formal education, professional literature) + May be required to walk up and down stairs. + May have to lift or move objects/materials as needed. + Work is permitted mostly within a New York City Public School but may be required to interact with community-at-large during trips or events. QUALIFICATIONS : + A high school diploma and at least two years of experience in school community work or school-based student-centered activities + Effective communication and interpersonal skills + Bilingual Spanish language preferred + Strong literacy skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues when necessary + Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion + Ability to develop trusting relationships with students, families and staff . + Ability to effectively communicate orally and writing with colleagues, parents, students, and the community The Coordinator of Student Supports will be required to report to the school building and interact with staff, students, parents, and school administration. At the time of offer and acceptance, the job requires safety and security clearances through the Department of Education and the Department of Health.
