The Role
HII, a global engineering and defense technologies provider recognized worldwide as America’s largest shipbuilder, has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Counsel 1 at our corporate office. This is a multi-faceted role involving subject matter expertise in litigation and investigations as well as legal counsel and support to business operations. Specifically, HII seeks an experienced attorney and thought leader to lead, direct and, where necessary, conduct internal investigations at its Mission Technologies Division. The position will support the investigative function for the Corporate Office and other HII business units as required. The candidate must have proven ability to manage all aspects of the investigatory process, including, but not limited to, supervising investigators, managing the work and budget of outside counsel, interviewing witnesses, supervising document collection and production, scoping investigations based on initial allegations, and reporting investigative findings. The candidate will have primary responsibility for internal legal investigations involving the False Claims Act (FCA), the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), and other regulatory and statutory obligations of government contractors and for advising senior management on the risks and any disclosure obligations arising from these investigations. The candidate will interact with representatives of various law enforcement and regulatory agencies as required and serve as the point of contact for inquiries from government regulators on FCA-related issues.
The position also provides general legal operations support to one or more of the business groups within the Mission Technologies Division. In that capacity, the role provides legal advice, counsel, and service to internal business clients concerning government contracting issues, risk identification and mitigation, legal rights, obligations, and privileges of corporations. The applicant must keep current on legislative issues, statutes, decisions, and ordinances of quasi-judicial bodies. Examines legal data to determine advisability of defending or prosecuting lawsuit. The applicant will act as agent of the corporation in various transactions, may develop, review, or implement company-wide and/or functionally specific training programs, may also oversee corporate governance matters and its various committees. Other responsibilities, assigned as required, may include managing litigation dockets and legal holds, facilitating document production, tracking internal investigations support, preparing government disclosures, and training corporate personnel on investigative best practices and relevant legal and regulatory issues.
The candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate accurately and concisely with internal and external stakeholders, including outside counsel, business leaders, and government officials. The candidate must have the ability to learn and understand complex operational processes and research factual and legal issues using internal and external resources. The position requires the candidate to perform a variety of tasks ranging from the repetitive to those calling for judgment and independent initiative.
Must HaveJuris Doctor Law degree from an ABA accredited law school, Virginia bar license or the ability to obtain a license to practice in Virginia, and at least nine (9) years of relevant legal experience from working in one of more of the following: in-house law department, law firm, and/or government agency.
