About the team

Dialpad’s Legal team plays an essential role in assessing risk and protecting the company while advancing business goals. This team collaborates closely with our Engineering, Sales, Marketing, Finance, Customer Success, and HR teams to improve the company’s overall effectiveness and to manage the myriad legal matters that these teams face. We are an intentionally small, highly competent group of legal professionals focused on velocity, scalability, and rigor to support Dialpad’s continued growth from startup to market leader.

Your role

T​his role will report to the ​Assistant General Counsel​ (Product and Privacy). ​Y​ou will play a critical role in providing legal counsel and guidance to our organization on a wide range of legal matters, with a primary focus on data protection and product issues.

This position reports to our Assistant General Counsel, Product and Privacy and is based either at Dialpad’s HQ in San Ramon, CA (preferred) or remotely in the U.S.

What you'll do

Proactively and critically evaluate Dialpad’s compliance posture across myriad product features—including AI, VoIP, and messaging—and drive improvements in line with business priorities. Understand, keep abreast of, and advise on global data protection, consumer protection, and telecommunications laws relevant to Dialpad’s products, including GDPR, EU AIA, CPRA, HIPAA, FCC, and FTC. Assist in driving scalability in legal operations through automation and process improvements. Communicate clearly, concisely, authoritatively, and persuasively orally and in writing, without manager supervision, to internal and external audiences. Prepare documentation, records of processing activities, data protection impact assessments, and regulatory filings in the US and abroad. Support Dialpad’s Commercial Legal team by consulting on negotiation positions for Data Protection Agreements, Business Associate Agreements, and other privacy-related commercial agreements and provisions. Support Dialpad’s Sales & Customer Care teams by joining customer calls as a subject matter expert. Support Dialpad’s Security team in implementing the legal infrastructure needed to support industry standards such as ISO, PCI, and HITRUST. Advise on complex issues emerging from the development and marketing of products and technologies including privacy, data security, and consumer protection by researching regulatory requirements and analyzing potential legal risks. Contribute to creating, improving, and enforcing data privacy policies, standards, and practices that are compliant with global legal requirements, by collaborating with stakeholders throughout the organization. Develop internal and external communications that turn complex regulations into understandable guidance.

Skills you’ll bring

J.D. from an ABA accredited law school. License in good standing to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction. 6-8 years of substantive experience with data protection strongly represented. Background in tech-forward lawyering; SaaS, AI, and telecommunications a plus. In-house experience or law firm experience advising clients on data protection and regulatory matters.
