Job DescriptionWhat’s it all about?
This role is a position within a fun, supportive and hard-working Commercial Legal Team, who manage a wide range of commercial, technology, intellectual property and product legal matters. This Team is part of a larger Legal, Ethics and Compliance Department, which also includes specialists advising on competition, regulatory, corporate, sourcing and data privacy matters. We pride ourselves on a creative, can-do approach.
The Counsel role will sit within the Europe Product, IP & Services part of the Commercial Legal Team. It will be responsible for providing efficient, effective and high quality legal support for the Value Added Services (VAS) function, with a particular focus on VAS deals, including complex arrangements combining multiple services and those with strategic clients. The role works closely with the wider EPIPS team, and with legal colleagues based in cluster offices across Europe, in affiliates, and in Global Legal.
What we expect of you day to day…
Lead negotiations of multi-faceted service agreements with clients, including strategic arrangements.
Provide commercial/IP legal advice and support relating to VAS matters, such as client agreements, pilot agreements, reseller agreements, the development of template contracts and other general commercial matters.
Draft, review, negotiate and advise on a wide range of contracts and legal issues relating to the matters above, including supervision of other lawyers.
Build a thorough understanding of the payments industry and Visa’s products and services while seamlessly incorporating them into decisions and advice.
Identify competition/anti-trust, data protection and other regulatory issues, and liaise with internal specialist members of the Legal, Ethics & Compliance Department and/or external counsel.
Identify the need for external legal advice and engage appropriate outside counsel on a range of legal issues across Visa’s European region.
Strong collaboration and relationship building with legal and business partners (including the VAS team), working closely with them to ensure advice and contracts accurately reflect business needs and policies as they develop.
Responsible for management of day-to-day legal queries.
Provide training to identified business areas, on law, processes and policies.
Proactively contribute to the Legal, Ethics & Compliance Department’s planning, cohesion, consistency in advice, and the general efficiency and effectiveness of the department as a whole.
Desirable Skills:
Previous experience of leading negotiations of complex, multi-jurisdictional contracts.
In-house experience
Knowledge of the fintech and payments industry (and applicable regulation)

Qualified lawyer in England & Wales with ideally 6 + PQE.
