Iona University Counseling Center Clinical Externs provide clinical mental health services and outreach programming to the students of Iona University, under the supervision of current Counseling Center staff. Externs are current graduate students in good standing. Eligible candidates are doctoral students in Clinical or Counseling Psychology in good standing at APA accredited programs, or 2nd year Master's students in good standing at accredited Mental Health Counseling programs. Externs are onsite for a minimum of 16 hours per week, with mandatory weekly seminars and supervision (individual and group). Externs receive 1 hour per week of individual clinical supervision and one hour of group supervision, as well as supervision on mental health outreach program development. Externs carry a caseload of individual therapy clients, provide BASICS substance abuse assessments, group counseling sessions, and create and deliver outreach programs in collaboration with Counseling Center staff. Externs are responsible for all aspects of the primary therapist role including provision of consistent therapy sessions, timely clinical documentation, responsiveness in crisis situations, and attendance of weekly individual and group supervision sessions with their assigned clinical supervisors. Externs must adhere to all ethical and legal guidelines relevant to the practice of psychotherapy in a university setting.
