EDEC 201 / EDSL 210 - First Year Professional Seminar / First Professional Seminar

Orientation to the culture and community of school and to teaching as a profession. Focus on the general functioning of schools and complexity of the teacher role. Competencies and working professional portfolios will be addressed

How to observe in second language classrooms. Students will be introduced to ways of observing instructional practices and procedures and will begin to reflect on various interactional patterns between teachers and students as observed in the First Year Field Experience. Professional portfolios and professional competencies will be addressed.

Teaching Qualification Requirements (TQR):

Education:

MA in a relevant field ( i.e. Kindergarten/elementary and/or Secondary education) and/or Master’s degree in Second Language Education or related area (In exceptional circumstances applicants without a Master's degree but with significant research or professional experience related to the course content may be considered) 

Teaching degree or equivalent

PhD or equivalent in a relevant field is an asset

Experience:

Expert knowledge of course content (i.e. school culture, teacher role and identity, professional and ethical behaviour related to schools, observation skills and reflective practice) 

Experience teaching English as a Second Language (ESL)

Knowledge of the Quebec Education Program (QEP)

Familiarity with the 13 professional competencies specified by the Ministère de l’Éducation.

Experience teaching in the Quebec Elementary or Secondary School system

Experience teaching ESL in the Quebec elementary/second French school system is an asset

Previous successful experience teaching similar course(s) to pre-service teachers is an asset

Other:

Knowledge of the impact and proven record of integrating pedagogical approaches anchored in equity, diversity and inclusion

Familiarity using MyCourses, Zoom, and other similar online platforms to facilitate quality teaching and learning experiences.

Familiarity teaching blended classes is an asset

Familiarity with the application of a variety of digital and pedagogical teaching and learning tools

A commitment to working with a team of committed and engaged instructors

Must be available to attend course coordination and planning meeting minimum of 2 weeks in advance of the course start date.

A commitment to working collaboratively in planning and delivering the course, to achieve l’approche programme (as mandated by CAPFE)

Course Dates: April 23, 2025 to May 5, 2025.

Contract Start Date: 2 weeks before course start date.

Contract End Date: 2 weeks after course end date.
