Job Description

We have an exciting new job opportunity for a temporary court usher to join one of our Government clients in London at the Croydon Crown Court as an Court Usher Our client HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is an agency of the Ministry of Justice.

This is a full-time temporary role for an ongoing 6 months with a view to extending the contract further.

The responsibilities of the role will include:


The Agency worker will:
o Prepare and open Court 30 minutes before court sits
o Collect and prepare relevant Law and textbooks
o Escort the Judge to and from the Court
o Keep accurate notes of the hearing
o Prepare for remote hearings
o IT knowledge desirable
o Ensure all relevant notices are displayed and updated as required
o Complete Witness and Counsel Slips in an accurate and timely manner
o Keep the Court clean and tidy
o Ensure Holy Books and Oath cards are stored respectfully and checked daily
o Correct swearing in of Witnesses and Jurors
o Ensure Court keys are kept safe as per Key Risk Controls
o Where simultaneous transcription is used
o Update loose leaf binders within 5 working days of receipt
o Work effectively in any business area as required
o Report to the Usher Manager for re-allocation immediately court has concluded for the day
o Assist generally with duties in any Rolls business area as required

o Remains calm, tactful and sensitive when dealing with difficult situations or people.
o Is aware of the customer needs and is efficient in dealing with these.
o Passes on important information to all concerned promptly and clearly, with tact and honesty.
o Works effectively on own and with others.


Experience working within a public facing environment is desirable
Provide some Administrative support and will follow set procedures and exercise with some independent judgement in carrying out work.
Good communication skills both oral and written required.
A working knowledge and experience of Microsoft Office


Salary: £12.56 per hour (with benefits of pension scheme and holiday.
Hours: 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 09:00-17:00
