Job Specification        

Department Overview:

Our UK business is focussed exclusively on Wholesale Banking and serves a multinational client base across a wide range of sectors and industries. Our office is situated in the heart of the City of London and occupies a modern building with first class facilities including onsite gym, coffee bar and staff restaurant.

The Coverage Banking Internship will consist of 2 x 6-month front office rotations across two of the following ING Wholesale Banking Sector Coverage teams

Corporate Sector Coverage working with a client base of FTSE100-250 corporates with primarily a European footprint across varying industries. The team is responsible for originating, coordinating and executing integrated corporate banking services or investment banking propositions for its clients, working across ING’s international network and in close alignment with product partners.  Standalone teams have recently been established focusing on the Telecommunications, Media and Technology (TMT) & Healthcare as well as the Energy sectors in the UK. These teams cover a wide range of predominately UK clients with global footprints.

Financial Institutions is split across four teams. Relationship Management cover ING’s relationships with banks, insurers, and asset managers, with a focus on delivering ING’s services and products across the network. Financial Sponsors Group focuses on managing ING’s relationships with ING’s largest financial sponsor relationships by income and exposure, coordinating across products and geographies to explore and maximise cross-buy opportunities. Fund Finance originates and structures lending transactions to funds managed by financial sponsors and asset managers. Insurance Sector Finance provides structured finance solutions to the global insurance industry.

Infrastructure Finance covers various Infrastructure assets across the UK and Europe (e.g. airports, ports, toll roads, Public Private Partnership concessions, social infrastructure and regulated utilities), as well as portfolio financings. We focus on deal origination and managing client relationships, working across the global ING network to provide the best solutions to our Infrastructure clients.

Real Estate Finance Real Estate Finance UK is a senior debt provider of credit facilities secured against income producing commercial properties primarily in the office, retail, logistics, residential and student accommodation sectors. It underwrites, syndicates and arranges club bank financing for major real estate clients such as Private Equity, UHNW/Family Offices and corporates and is an integral part of the global ING Real Estate Finance network of offices that operate internationally throughout Europe, USA, Asia and Australia.

Shipping Finance The Shipping Finance team provides the full range of ING’s product suite to leading shipowners to assist with the acquisition of vessels but also to help them manage risk within their business. In addition we help them identify growth opportunities and support them in their transition to a net zero carbon future.

Main Duties and Responsibilities of Role:

This is an exciting opportunity to join our Coverage Banking internship scheme and get first-hand experience in managing client relationships and originating new opportunities.

Key Tasks:

Client contact management – understand the strategy for each client to support the team in maintaining and developing relationships with existing clients: 

Prepare briefing packs, presentations and pitches in conjunction with the team and product partners for client meetings

Assist with the necessary post-meeting follow-up on agreed actions

Maintain our client database and system inputs up-to-date.

New business opportunities / prospect clients – align with the team to maintain client dialogue, monitor client activity, follow market developments and respond to opportunities accordingly.

Learn product and geographic knowledge of ING’s strengths and broaden network

Identify prospective new clients in the UK market and prepare an overview of these prospects (strategic, geographic and product fit; summary financials) to facilitate internal discussions.

Origination - support the team and product partners in the origination process and delivery of transactions or mandates:

Support with commercial approval requests

Close collaboration with product specialists to execute opportunities.

KYC – support the KYC process to ensure all steps of customer acceptance process are completed / updated / renewed satisfactorily for both new and existing clients.

Data quality – work with the team and other colleagues (Risk/Finance) to ensure that internal exposure and income reporting systems accurately reflect the client information and the performance of the client relationship. Keep opportunities, deal teams and call reports in our internal systems up to date. Ensure accurate administration of client information and files.

Communication – on completion of major transactions, work with the team to ensure that the Deals Database template is completed and that a transaction ‘story’ is made available for use in internal marketing to senior management of the Bank.  

Candidate Profile

Qualification/Education

A recent graduate or graduating in summer 2025 with a minimum 2:1 degree in a business-related subject e.g. Finance, Economics, Banking, Accountancy, etc.

Strong A-level (or equivalent) results

Prior experience through internships is of added value but not a pre-requisite

Strong numerical, analytical and writing skills

Fluent English language skills both written and oral
