Position Summary:

MPC’s Mandan Refinery located in Mandan, ND is seeking a maintenance craft worker who specializes in heavy equipment operation. A Heavy Equipment Operator is required to have a working knowledge of equipment including excavator, dozer, motor grader, loader (rubber tire and skid), backhoe, hydraulic crane, carry deck, forklift, vacuum truck, dump truck and other heavy equipment. 

A Heavy Equipment Operator must have an understanding and demonstrate knowledge of safety rules and procedures, process safety hazards, job and refinery rules, procedures and policies and the application and proper use of safety and personal protective equipment.  This position will also perform general plant maintenance as needed. 

This position is located in Mandan, ND and reports to the Maintenance Foreman.

Key Responsibilities:

Operates equipment including excavator, dozer, motor grader, loader (rubber tire and skid), backhoe, hydraulic crane, carry deck, forklift, vacuum truck, dump truck and other heavy equipment.Performs routine daily maintenance on all equipment, including fueling, servicing and minor mechanical repairs including fleet vehicle maintenance. Maintains equipment by greasing properly and checking fluids daily (oils, coolant, fuel level). In addition to a general knowledge of the application of all types of heavy equipment, a heavy equipment operator must be proficient in trouble shooting and repairing mechanical issues including hydraulic and electrical systems.Responsible for safely operating crane to move various load types and weights from one point to another. Operate crane and position loads, such as machinery, equipment, products, and solid or bulk materials, using hosting attachments, such as hook, sling, or bucket.  Ability to safely operate heavy equipment in and around congested areas and obstructions including underground and overhead process piping lines and electric utilities.Uses equipment as appropriate to perform construction/maintenance and snow removal of road systems, parking lots and refinery grounds maintenance.Operates heavy equipment to prepare undeveloped job sites and construct or grade new roads or lay down areas to proper slope and grade specifications. Work will not be limited to heavy equipment operator duties.  Individual will be required to perform many other duties in the maintenance of an industrial plant.

Education and Experience:

HS Diploma or GED Required.Minimum of two years of heavy equipment operation required.  Refinery or similar process plant experience preferred.Minimum of two years of crane experience required. National Commission for the certification of crane operators (NCCCO or equivalent) preferred. Successful candidate will be required to have crane certification within 120 days of start date. Valid driver’s license required.

Skills:

Experience in basic rigging principles is essential. Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to use multiple types of hand tools. Ability to work overtime, work after hour callouts, and occasional plant shutdowns/startups.Ability to physically perform all duties required which may involve (among others): bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing ladders, work at heights or in confined spaces, lifting and carrying loads up to 50 lbs.Ability to work efficiently and safely alone as well as part of a team.Self-motivated with ability of following oral and written instruction.

Pay and Benefits:

Employees with heavy equipment work experience who are qualified can start at $36.64 - $42.48. The maximum rate for the position is $50.35 with demonstrated qualification/proficiency after being hired. Annual increases are scheduled.
