Crane Superintendent
Reports To: Site Manager
Benefit Classification: Salaried, Exempt
Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or related degree; or a 2-year technical college degree with a minimum of 2 years construction supervisory experience.; or a minimum of 5 years of construction supervisory experience.
Experience: Five years’ minimum experience working with, operating or assembly/disassembly, maintaining and training on multiple crane makes, sizes and configurations. Extensive experience with cranes, planning and executing all crane operations; familiar with heavy and critical lifting planning and operations within wind and/or heavy construction industry. Previous supervisory experienced preferred.
Position Summary
Works as one with the Installation Trade Superintendents with shared goals to plan, execute, and complete projects efficiently. Overlaps crane expertise with Installation work to supervise and mentor Assistant Superintendents, Forepersons, and all craft personnel. Has main oversight, responsibility and accountability of crane equipment and operations onsite. Not limited to; operator qualifications, training, crane size planning, Assembly/Disassembly planning & coordination, inspections, damage control, logistics planning, budgeting. Collaborates with site team in planning, scheduling maintenance, movement, operation, installation and dismantling of cranes on site and within the company. Ensures activities involving cranes are done efficiently. Confirms current training requirements of operators, required by federal, state, and BEI Policys and Procedures.
Essential Job Functions
1. Supervises and sets direction for Crane Forepersons on-site to ensure use of all company resources; and adherence to all company policies and state and federal regulations. Provides formal quarterly (at a minimum) coaching feedback to these Forepersons as well as regular informal feedback. Ensures development of front line employees through onboarding, training, and mentoring.
2. Collaborates with other Trade Superintendents and Forepersons as needed in the planning and scheduling of onsite crane activities (maintenance, mobing, operation, installation, dismantling, training, etc.). Oversees crane mobilization between projects as well as onsite mobs.
3. Collaborates with site personnel including General Superintendents to provide guidance in the planning and scheduling of crane resources (cranes and operators) for the job site.
4. Provides guidance to site teams to ensure there are adequate competent personnel onsite related to crane operations; and works with site management in developing a plan to train operators when necessary. Ensures all operators, formen, and others complete and carry all Federal, State, local, and other proper training per Corporate Crane and Rigging Procedures. Trains and advises personnel (e.g. crane foremen, installation superintendents, operators) on proper crane operations and documentation including lifting, hoisting, critical lifts, inspections, maintenance, etc.
5. Mentors Installation Superintendents and Crane Foremen on crane knowledge and abilities; and provides feedback to Site Managers and General Superintendents to ensure competent personnel are supervising crane activities. Suggest training opportunities for both groups as needed.
6. Accountable and has the responsibility to ensure safe working conditions and safety procedures regarding crane operations including familiarization with site conditions. Understands and enforces company, jobsite specific, federal, and state safety regulations on site and discusses
concerns with site supervision. Is responsible for the utilization of Corporate Crane and Rigging Procedures as well as SWIs with emphasis on special risks regarding cranes and lifting.
7. Communicates with Site Manager to update him/her on project problem areas and the specific status of the project.
8. Display a professional demeanor and acts professionally while interacting with internal and external individuals. The Superintendent is expected to create a collaborative environment with Blattner Energy craft, subcontractors, vendors, and the Owner to continually improve Blattner Energy’s delivery performance.
9. Collaborates with the Installation and other Trade Superintendents in understanding the scope of work pertaining to crane activities; compares actual costs to the job estimate; identifies variances from bid and informs the Site Manager.
10. Verifies that crane activities are in conformance with the Corporate Crane and Rigging Procedures.
11. Ensures Crane Foreman are engaging in necessary administravitve duties (i.e. perfoming training, audits of operators, “paperwork”, and mobile apps documentation, etc) and technical expertise around crane A/D, inspections, lift works, maintaininence, etc.
Additional Job Functions
· May at times act as a project leader in the absence of the Trade Superintendent.
· Perform additional assignments per supervisor’s direction.
· Support economic conditions by hiring locally, attending job fairs, and attending public information meetings.
· Become a project liaison with key community leaders, local land owners, and utility companies regarding crane work as needed.
· Work with various departments to continually enhance crane related policies and procedures.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
· Excellent knowledge of technical requirements and governing procedures for lifting and hoisting including, but not limited to technical drawings and calculations system, plan & reporting systems.
· Ability to create, maintain and develop strong teams.
· Knowledge of safety standards in a construction environment.
· Strong interpersonal & communication skills.
· Strong organization skills.
· Accreditted Crane training in Lattice and Large Hydraulic Cranes a plus
· Obtains and maintains a NCCCO Rigger and Lift Director Certification
· Knows and understands where to find and interprete the federal and or state OSHA laws; pertaining to cranes and rigging.
· Familiar with Assembly / Dissassembly processes and experience managing and or performing A/D work on various cranes
· Must have a valid drivers’ license and an acceptable motor vehicle driving record (MVR). Class A CDL is a plus.
