Description
Are you seeking a full-time opportunity that allows you to utilize your crime/statistical analysis experience to make a direct impact in the community? If so, apply to the City of Harrisonburg's Crime Analyst position!
The Crime Analyst is a full-time position with benefits and a preferred hiring range of $25.89 - $28.48 per hour (equivalent to $53,851 - $59,238 annually); however, an exact salary will be dependent upon the selected candidate's qualifications and experience and in compliance with City Policy. The ideal candidate for this position will perform a variety of work involving the collection, analysis, and distribution of criminal data to assist law enforcement in locating property and wanted persons, arresting suspects, solving cases, and identifying/predicting crime trends.
As the Crime Analyst, you'll:
+ Develop and maintain programs to collect, collate, analyze, disseminate, and evaluate crime data to discover developing patterns, trends, and changes in criminal activity including frequency, geographic factors, victims, targets, suspect descriptors, chronological information, suspect vehicle descriptions, modus operandi factors, potential and actual police hazards, and physical evidence information;
+ Conduct intelligence analysis and create actionable intelligence products;
+ Utilize various databases and software to analyze and interpret crime data related to crime scenes, patterns, and suspect profiles;
+ Utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to produce computer-generated maps displaying crime activity;
+ Assist in the conversion of GIS data to proprietary software format, testing of data, and troubleshooting street, point, and layer problems within ESRI or proprietary map software;
+ Generate various reports, bulletins, and maps identifying criminal activity, suspect information, and crime trends and prevention methods;
+ Perform statistical analyses and prepare related budget reports as requested;
+ Research, compile, analyze, and interpret statistical data from a variety of sources including offense and arrest reports, land use, census reports, and more;
+ Perform data analysis using crime, calls for service, demographic, and housing data for deployment purposes;
+ Perform link analysis for various types of white collar crimes and crimes against persons;
+ Present analysis to command staff and detectives in order to deploy officers to specific areas of the City experiencing crime series or elevated crime levels;
+ Present information to City Council, City Administration, and the public using graphical displays, as needed;
+ Assist department in “Hot Spot” determination and possible causal characteristics in a timely and efficient manner;
+ Maintain intelligence database in accordance with federal retention standards;
+ Attend conferences and meetings to stay current on the latest technology and crime analysis processes;
+ Train and orient new employees and others, as necessary;
+ Conduct training courses on crime analysis to citizen groups and police officers;
+ Serve as the initial contact related to crime analysis requests, correspondence, and questions related to crime patterns and trends;
+ Assist with conducting special studies, projects, and programs involving the broad scope of crime analysis;
+ Build and maintain strong working relationships with other jurisdictions to enhance collaboration;
+ Operate a City vehicle in the performance of the job duties.

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
+ Bachelor’s Degree in criminal justice, computer science, math, or related field and considerable (3-5 years) experience in crime/statistical analysis. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be used to meet this requirement.
+ Valid driver's license.

The selected candidate for this position will be subject to the following screenings and must receive satisfactory results:
+ DMV Driving Record Review;
+ Criminal Background Investigation, including Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) Query & Fingerprinting*.
*Due to the sensitive nature of information available through the performance of this position's essential functions, the successful applicant selected for the role will be subject to a criminal background investigation and fingerprinting by the Harrisonburg Police Department. At a later date, more information will be provided to the candidate selected for those steps in this process.
