Cultural Monitor

The Cultural Monitor will be responsible for working with construction contractors, archaeologist and environmental planning consultants to monitor for cultural resources during ground disturbing activities at construction sites. Utilizing their training and experience, the Cultural Monitor will identify, archive, preserve and protect Kumeyaay cultural resources.

 

CORE SCOPE OF POSITION

The Cultural Monitor will be responsible for construction monitoring and authoring reports, as needed. Assuming temporary work stoppages to permit a closer view of a potential discovery. Report any concerns or issues related to cultural finds on the construction site to the ATHPO. Documenting activities on a daily log which will be delivered to the ATHPO at the end of each pay period. In addition, the Cultural Monitor must have knowledge of CEQA/NEPA. Candidates must be comfortable with strenuous hiking and changing climate conditions. Knowledge of San Diego and Imperial Valley region in California culture and history. Possess excellent written/verbal communication skills. Ability to identify the artifacts and cultural features. Work and communicate efficiently with other agencies, Native American Groups and construction crews.

Does not provide supervision to others.

 

 

 

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION

High School diploma desirable. Must have a certificate of participation in a Kumeyaay Cultural Monitor Training. Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Ideal candidate will have construction monitoring experience. Cultural Monitor must have 120 hours of trainee experience prior to being assigned to off-site monitoring projects. Paid trainee experience hours, will be provided by Viejas Tribal Government, Resource Management Department. Self‐motivated, organized, and able to meet tight deadlines.
