This position will oversee school and teacher programming for the New Orleans locations of the Louisiana State Museums. This includes developing educational resources, coordinating and training docents, conducting school and teacher outreach, working with the Education Assistant on the booking process, and supporting other education programming. Job Concepts Function of Work: To perform and supervise the curatorial activities for a museum or historic sites program. Level of Work: Entry. Supervision Received: General from a Curator 2 or 3, Historic Site or Recreation Area Manager, Parks District Manager, Museum Division Director, Historic Preservation Director, Archives Assistant Administrator, Architectural Historian Manager, or other higher ranking agency administrator. Supervision Exercised: Functional over lower ranking museum or historic area personnel. Performs curatorial activities for a museum program at a state park Level I commemorative, preservation, or recreation area. Plans, constructs, and displays exhibits both in the museum and on site. Schedules and conducts tours; develops oral presentations for such tours. Selects and assigns tour guides and maintenance staff. Develops and implements conservation and preservation plans of historical artifacts and buildings. Maintains records, prepares reports, and conducts correspondence regarding the museum or historic preservation program. Performs research to develop interpretative items. Performs accessing and cataloging activities of museum materials. Catalogues site forms on historic buildings and places, checks and continually accessions additional site forms for inventory. Develops projects to produce measured architectural drawings of landmark buildings, checks for quality and maintains archival collections. Prepares and presents slide presentations and speeches to interested groups on and off site. RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: 75% School and Teacher programs, including: • Oversee the redevelopment of the docent program for the Cabildo, Presbytere, and 1850 House, including collaborating with our partners at Friends of the Cabildo on training and coordination of guided museum programming • Develop lesson plans, exhibition guides, videos, and other online resources that support Grade Level Expectations • Work with the Part-Time Education Assistant to manage group reservations, maintain records, and ensure an easy booking process for group coordinators and teachers • Conducting outreach to schools, teachers, and other educational organizations, including managing a bi-monthly e-mail newsletter • Lead school tours and/or greet schools when necessary develop and implement teacher professional development opportunities 20% Supporting the development of educational programming by assisting with projects such as: • Assist with other educational programming, including family and camp programs, adult classes and events. Includes occasional weekend and evening work • Collaborate with other museums and cultural institutions to develop new partnerships and programming • Assist with exhibition planning, including developing educational interactives • Support evaluation of educational programs • Assist with grant applications • Utilize museum databases such as Galaxy (ticketing system) and TMS (collections management system) to retrieve data on group visits and conduct research for programs, exhibitions, and educational resources 5% All other duties as specified by supervisor.
