Duties Description Under the direction of the Historic Site Manager, the incumbent’s responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:• Supervising the care and management of the site’s collections and historic structures and providing the site with information and guidance on care of its historic landscape.• Organizing, updating, and maintaining records; working closely with staff at the Bureau of Historic Sites & Parks (BHSP) to integrate the site’s records into the Bureau’s new online database, including the digitization of existing records; continuing the selection process of archival collections documents for digitization and public access.• Conducting research on collections, site history, and related topics to support the site’s current interpretive programs and future goals.• Collaborating with other site staff to plan and schedule blog and social media posts; create exhibitions; deliver interpretive talks and programs for the public; and represent the site at public forums such as conferences/symposia and professional gatherings.• Submitting grant applications to support specific projects that are determined as priorities for the site in the areas of conservation, preservation, interpretation, collections care and management, and community engagement in collaboration with other site staff, bureaus and partner organizations. • Creating and managing a college-level or graduate-level internship program that is seasonal and project-based, to support prioritized site needs in the areas of collections care and management and/or interpretation. • Supervising other site staff on collections housekeeping and managing the site’s environmental monitoring and integrated pest management programs.• Creating a site-specific disaster prevention and response plan for all collections and arranging for purchase of all needed materials; working along with other staff to inspect historic rooms and collection areas regularly.• Overseeing the site’s handling and moving of collections in historic rooms and storage areas to ensure their safety and security, particularly for periodic activities such as capital projects, annual holiday events, Friends events, and film/photo shoots. May periodically perform medium to heavy labor tasks.• Participating in the site’s operations meeting and other meetings focused on advancing site and public operations.• Assisting with public tours, events and programs, administrative and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).**To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55 b/c, candidates must meet the open-competitive minimum qualifications for this position. The qualifications are:Either 1. a bachelor’s degree in American Studies, Art History, History, History of Technology, Museum Studies, or Public History AND two years of professional experience in collections in a historical museum, general museum with historical collections or historic site.Or 2. a master’s degree or higher in any of the above disciplines and ONE year of the qualifying experience as noted above.Candidates may also be qualified for permanent competitive appointment if reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.Transfer Opportunity: Candidates must be current New York State employees and have one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service in a title eligible for transfer under Section 52.6 or 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.Additional Comments:**For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a permanent, non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.It is essential that candidates clearly and concisely indicate exactly how they meet the above minimum qualifications in their resume. Failure to show how you meet the minimum qualifications above may result in disqualification and removal from consideration.
