The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is seeking a Cytologist II to join the team:
Summary:
The Cytologist has the appropriate educational background to perform a variety of routine and complex tasks with emphasis on diagnostic skills related to exfoliative and aspiration Cytopathology. The Cytologist demonstrates a thorough knowledge of Cytopathology operations, including theoretical aspects of technical procedures, as well as department policies and routines with minimal technical supervision.
Responsibilities:
+ Performs accurate evaluation of the Fields of View (FOV) as selected by the computer-assisted slide imaging system for Pap slides
+ Performs accurate manual microscopic examination of slides
+ Signs out all negative gynecologic cases and refers all abnormal gynecologic cases, as well as all non-gyn cases, to the Cytopathologist
+ Accurately screens FISH slides by fluorescent microscope and prepares preliminary reports for pathologists
+ Pre-Analytical: Rotates through the Cytoprep Lab to include assurance of specimen receipt with identification verification procedures
+ Evaluates specimen condition maintaining specimen integrity
+ Ensures that work areas are equipped and daily tasks completed
+ Analytical: Microscopic evaluation and documentation of specimen adequacy
+ Evaluates and documents technical preparation and processing adequacy
+ Interprets microscopic findings to formulate a diagnosis that correlates with given clinical data and with precision highlighting of pertinent slide findings
+ Attends fine needle aspirations to evaluate cellularity of the specimen
+ Files slides and paperwork by case number for easy retrieval
+ Monitors and participates in Post Analytic testing phase laboratory activities to include: Appropriate reporting using Bethesda System criteria
+ Correlation with tissue biopsy and hematology write's smear findings
+ Assurance that Medical & Abnormal Gyn cases are reviewed by pathologists
+ Maintains a clean, orderly, and safe work area
+ Complies with Hospital and Laboratory safety regulations
+ Notifies Supervisor when hazards are found
+ Completes mandatory inservices on or before the due date
+ Maintains, receives, dates and labels inventory of supplies needed to keep the section in working order
+ Provides Supervisor with adequate notification when supplies need to be replenished
+ Answers telephone, provides patient results, and assists with the resolution of specimen problems
+ Assists in Medical Student, Resident, and Cytotechnology training instruction
+ Attends in-house continuing education programs
+ Responsible for maintaining adequate staffing on all three shifts, weekends, and holidays
Credentials:
+ Certification by a minimum standards knowledge-based exam such as the Board of Certification CT (ASCP) (Required)
OR
+ 5 years of experience as a Cytologist (Required)
Education or Equivalent Experience:
+ Bachelor of Science in Cytotechnology from an accredited school (Required)
+ Prior experience with Laboratory Information Systems (Preferred)
