Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Position Qualifications:
Position Summary: Responsible for assisting in the overall operation of the department including orientating, evaluating, and documenting performance of testing personnel. In conjunction with the Department Supervisor and Cytology Manager. Assist in establishing, maintaining, and revising departmental policies and procedures to include quality control, quality assurance, and safety. Assist in maintaining departmental expenses and productivity within targets.
Principle Responsibilities:
Assist in hiring and directing departmental staff in the performance of their duties.
Assist in interviewing all prospective applicants for department
Assist in new team member orientation and training
Assist in competency testing and performance appraisals for team members
Utilizes staff effectively through scheduling and work assignments.
Assist in overseeing and maintaining the following;
Preanalytical phases of testing including: accessioning, aliquotting, and processing of specimens
Department workflow to meet TAT requirements while assuring proper identification and quality of preparation.
Maintains quality control and quality assurance programs, taking corrective action when indicated.
Updates staff regarding new instrumentation, procedures and pre analytical methods
Follows and enforces all safety policies
Assist in utilizing the following tools to manage departmental resources
Maintains expenses within targeted goals.
Maintains appropriate chemicals and supplies to correspond with testing requirements
Monitors archiving and disposal of specimens to comply with specified retention and discard policies
Identifies and recommends items for capital purchase
Evaluates data to determine the most cost effective methods and supplies
Utilizes acquired skills and abilities to perform pre analytical procedures required for cytology testing.
Ability to operate all pre analytical equipment and perform all pre analytical test methods
In conjunction with Cytology Processing Supervisor and the Cytology Manager, assists with implementation of new pre analytical testing methodology Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, deferring problem specimens for handling according to company policy
Performs miscellaneous duties and/or special projects as assigned
Scope: Promotes quality relations and creates supportive climate by serving as a role model. Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to the laboratory. Adheres to and enforces prescribed laboratory safety policies and regulations. Works independently while being receptive to corrective actions required by technical and pathologist staff. Functions as a liaison between cytology and other departments. Operates laboratory equipment, including but not limited to: telephones, LIS, PC, centrifuges, Hologic Prep Systems, SurePath Prep Systems, Automated Stainers and Coverslippers, and Image analyzers. Effectively communicates via written, verbal, face-to-face, telephone, and computer methods.
Education:
High School Diploma
Preferred: Degree in Science
Experience:
Minimum – two years’ experience in a high volume laboratory or other similar setting
Preferred – Cytology Prep Technician, Specimen processing, MLT or HT background
Skills: Ability to organize and direct high volume workflow including the selection, training and motivation of personnel, identification and resolution of problems and effective decision -making under pressure.
Reporting Relationship:
Reports to the Cytology Processing Supervisor
Positions supervised – Cytology Laboratory Assistants, Cytology Liquid Base Processors, Non Gyn Preparatory Technician.
Physical Requirements: Requires light to medium lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires manipulation of tools, objects, and equipment using the following physical motions: pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching above shoulder height, grasping with both hands, pinching with thumb and forefinger, twisting with hand and wrist, climbing under, lifting up, lifting down, and reaching under. Routinely requires coordination of two or more physical operations. Routinely requires visual discrimination of color, size, shape, and motility. Requires the ability to hear audible alarms on temperature monitored equipment and automated analyzers.
Environmental Demands: Works in temperature controlled environment with constant exposure to biological and chemical hazards. May be required to operate fire and safety equipment or follow other safety procedures in an emergency situation. May be required to work with time constraints and in crisis situations.
