Job Description:
Position Summary: Under the direction of the Cytology Supervisor, performs a variety of tasks associated with the microscopic examination of gynecologic cell samples using the thin prep and conventional slide preparation techniques. Examines non-gynecologic specimens including bronchial, biliary tract, and other specimens as well as fine needle aspirations (FNA) from various sites. Assists with onside slide preparation and specimen preparation for radiologic and non-radiologically guided FNAs. Assists in non-gynecologic cyto-preparations as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
Licensure, Certification, Registration: Board Certification C.T. (A.S.C.P.) or eligible.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:
Knowledge of clinical tests and standards necessary to perform complex tests and accurately report result.Analytic ability to perform complex tests, to interpret findings, perform calculations, calibrate instruments, etc.Ability to identify and evaluate clinical testing problems and to effect corrective action procedures and modifications.Ability to independently assess clinical test results and recommend appropriate additional tests and procedures to medical staff.Ability to provide technical guidance and instruction within area of expertise.Ability to concentrate for long periods of time, to utilize good judgment, work accurately under pressure and handle stress to met deadlines.Manual dexterity and acuity necessary to prepare specimens, prepare solutions, screen specimens, and operate instrumentation and a computer.Interpersonal verbal and written English language skills sufficient to exchange information with physicians and other colleagues.Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.In the absence of certain of these skills, demonstrates the ability to be thoroughly trained to meet organizational standards.Experience: Up to 5 years in a hospital cytology laboratory.
