Cytotechnologist - Cytology Histology - Full Time

Position Summary: Performs cytology screening and related clerical and technical functions independent of direct supervision, to include but not limited to assisting in specimen preparation or evaluation of collected samples. Duties may be performed in the laboratory or remote locations. Technologist will be expected to be able to assist the Section Manager in all phases of cytology operations.

Education, License & Cert: Must meet federal requirements for Cytotechnologist qualifications. Preferable four years of college work, which must include 12 hours of biology in an accredited college or university. Completion of a cytology internship and certification as a cytotechnologist by the Board or Registry of ASCP or equivalent. Eligible for or hold an active NYSDOH license.

Experience: Must have a working knowledge of cytology laboratory. Essential Functions: Accurately screens, interprets, and diagnoses negative GYN preparations and refers 10 % of negative GYN cases to pathology for quality control. Learns and applies special histologic techniques as required for the efficient running of the service. Performs and documents quality control procedures relevant to the situation.  Checks work against established quality control standards of performance.

Performs and documents maintenance check and adjustments on all appropriate instruments and equipment, including microscopes.  Will inform Section Manager of potential repair needs. Brings any problems of a technical nature to the attention of the Section Manager. Accurately documents and maintains reporting and records for the department to include established workload limits as required by CLIA and Laboratory Guidelines. Accurately documents and maintains reporting and records for patient and quality control and assurance reports Keeps close check on section supplies and makes recommendations to Section Manager. May be required to fill in for departmental manager during regular manager’s absence when requested and/or work on special projects as requested by lab leadership. Observes proper safety practices in performance of job duties. Follows established Guthrie Clinic and Lab policies and procedures.

Maintains a professional mature, positive attitude while performing job. Methodically refers all presumptively positive GYN findings to the pathologist, while maintaining adequate documentation and follow through. Keeps up to date with current cytology practices, procedures, and techniques. Performs other duties as assigned by Section Manager or Administrative Director. Provide patient microscopic findings for non‐gyn preparations to assist pathologists in the preparation of pathology reports, while maintaining adequate documentation and follow through. Accurately identify cells for the determination of possible malignancy or related abnormal conditions.

When requested or as scheduled, timely, be present in the operating room or other locations to provide onsite adequacy of FNA's, EBUS, EUS and other procedures when needed. Performs required quality control and quality assurance and additional measures as necessary to assure departmental excellence. Maintains a clean and organized area and prepares and documents satisfactory staining quality, with corrective action documented as needed. May be expected to instruct or teach employees or students regarding the department activities. Competently and accurately receives, accessions, prepares, and stains all cytology specimens as needed

The pay range for this position is $31.96 - $50.62/hr
