Job Summary:
Must have extensive knowledge in preparing, staining, and evaluating gynecological and non-gynecological material including fine needle aspirations. Demonstrates competency in assessing all material with a high level of accuracy.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
The following is a summary of the major functions of this individual's job. He or she may perform other duties, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below, and specific functions may change from time to time.
1. Assists with fine needle aspiration immediate evaluation and procurement.
2. Performs processing, staining and cover slipping of various types of cytological material.
3. Performs routine microscopic evaluation of Cytologic smears and cell blocks.
4. Performs operation and maintenance of the microscope, centrifuge, cytocentrifuge, and all chemical reagents.
5. Performs clerical duties including entering data into computers, answering phones, and distribution of reports.
6. Completely and correctly screens and interprets cytologic specimens.
7. Numbers specimens received into logbook and computer system with proper identification as to the patient and specimen type.
8. Assists with processing of specimen collected in C.T. scan and frozen sections as required.
9. Monitors the supplies of the department.
10. Assists or participates in special projects.
11. Participates in educational activities for continuing education and professional development.
12. Demonstrates positive customer relations by maintaining a good rapport and cooperative working relationship with all customers.
13. Participates in the Laboratory Quality Assurance Program.
14. Completes annual competency validation, mandatory safety programs and OSHA requirements
Minimum Education, Training and Experience Required:
A. Baccalaureate degree or higher from a regionally accredited college/university and successful completion of the Cytotechnology program from an accredited institution. Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) is required.
