Damage Prevention Specialist I

Position Title: Damage Prevention Specialist I

The Damage Prevention Specialist I is responsible for identifying, locating and marking the location of all subsurface utilities in order to minimize damage or disruption of service due to construction excavation activities.  Works, drives, and walks over all types of terrain (grass, gravel, ditches) in and around construction zones and residential, commercial, industrial, and rural areas in all types of weather conditions.

Pay Rate: $20.00 - $23.00

Roles and Responsibilities:

Utilizes and maintains various company issued locate tools and equipment for proper use, storage, and upkeep. Collect GPS pinpointed data to map locates of underground utilities, including electric power, gas, water cable tv and sewer systems. Locating and marking of natural gas pipelines. Collect data of excavated utilities on a jobsite, including potholes and cross bores. Utilizes maps / blueprints to interpret facilities to determine the presence of underground utilities. Thoroughly map underground utilities in a designated area, accurately updating collection maps of the location, completing necessary documentation, and effectively photographing each job site. Completes all work in an organized, timely manner, within standard operating procedure. Removes and replaces manhole lids. Uses laptop computer or other electronic devices to receive and document status of excavation notices. Communicates effectively with supervision, operational support, and clients. Report any issues in the field that may prevent accidents. Performs project quality control. Performs all duties assigned in a SAFE manner on private and public work areas.

Success Factors:

Strong attention to detail. Strong communication skills with the general public. Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under adverse climatic conditions. Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of jobsite in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, or stretching. Exposure to characteristic construction site dangers. Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions. Ability to work well independently and as a part of a team with co-workers. Ability to pass motor vehicle, criminal background check, and comply with drug-free workplace policy. English usage sufficient to keep records, place orders, and prepare simple narrative reports. Willingness and ability to learn additional skills. 

Experience and Education:

Experience locating underground utilities a plus but not required. SiteWise entry level basic locating training up to 45 days. Entry level HIP technician including Screening locate request, Interpreting Prints, learning Hip process such as field audits and basic standbys. Entry level introduced to special projects Pipe to Soil, Leak Survey, Atmospheric Corrosion, Line Marker Installs, etc. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted on a year-to-year basis. Minimum 1-year tenure in described job roles before advancement.

Additional Requirements/Licenses/Certifications:

Possession of a valid State of Residence Driver’s License is required. Candidates must pass criminal and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) background checks and pass a pre-employment drug screen.
