Darden PREP (Prison Reentry Education Program) Coordinator (Staff Wage)

The University of Virginia Darden School of Business has an exciting part-time position (30 hours per week) for a Darden PREP (Prison Reentry Education Program) Coordinator.

Darden currently has over 60 MBA student instructors who volunteer in local correctional facilities in the fall and spring semesters to support business education for incarcerated learners, under the supervision of faculty from UVA’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) and the Darden School. The PREP coordinator liaises with SCPS, Darden student instructors, faculty, staff, Department of Corrections (DOC), and Resilience Education partners to make this program successful. The PREP coordinator also supports the Darden faculty members who oversee the PREP course for MBA student instructors and the UVA SCPS faculty member(s) who oversee the instruction for incarcerated learners.

Darden PREP is currently offered in partnership with the DOC in 3 correctional facilities around the greater Charlottesville area, 2 men’s facilities and 1 women’s. The three SCPS courses that are taught are Entrepreneurship (year-long), Foundations in Business (1 semester), and Financial Capability (1 semester).

MBA student instructors work under the direction of SCPS faculty in teams that teach 2 times a week throughout the semester. The Darden PREP Coordinator recruits, trains, and coordinates both the MBA student instructors’ and the incarcerated learners’ engagement in PREP. This position is located in-person in Charlottesville, VA with flexibility for hybrid work.

Duties and responsibilities:

Program Recruiting and Marketing

Assist with recruiting efforts for MBA student instructors, which include interest sessions, office hours and emailsAssist with efforts to raise awareness about the PREP program around the Darden Enterprise more broadlyAssist with the application/selection of MBA student instructorsAssist with applications/selection of incarcerated learners

Support MBA Instructor Volunteers

Coordinate, prepare, and hold training sessions for the MBA student instructorsAssign/establish MBA student instructor team leadersHost monthly check-ins with MBA teaching teams and team leadersOrganize and share the Resilience Education casebook materials with the correctional facilitiesSend weekly emails to share which MBA student instructors will be teaching at the Facilities for the weekHost a yearly debrief program meeting with Facility partners each summerMaintain good communication with Facility partners as there are constant lockdowns, changes in schedule, or MBA student instructors that may need assistancePlan incarcerated learner graduation dates with Facility partnersHelp MBA student instructors, staff/faculty, or any other guest speakers complete clearance paperworkCoordinate fingerprinting for MBA student instructors and Darden faculty

Working with Incarcerated Learners

Prepare facility course schedules and provide updates when there are class cancelationsMaintain incarcerated learners’ attendance sheets and track submission of make- up assignmentsVisit the sites regularly (at least once a month) to check the program’s progress; provide feedback as needed to MBA student instructors and Facility partnersHold evaluation sessions with incarcerated learners to give back their instructors’ feedback and have them fill out post-release formsAssist the Faculty of Record in Managing Logistics for MBA Student Instructors’ PREP CourseTrack the participation of MBA student instructors throughout their work with PREP (number of days teaching, participation in meetings with PREP coordinator, etc.), and share data with Faculty of RecordCoordinate with Darden’s registrar to ensure MBA student instructors are accurately enrolled in PREP related courses

Additional Partnerships and Responsibilities

Coordinate with Resilience Education to ensure that they have provided the most updated version of the contracted curriculumCoordinate with Resilience Education during the program delivery on joint evaluations, data collection and other information sharingOrganize and maintain data on incarcerated learner enrollmentCoordinate with UVA SCPS’ registrar to ensure accurate enrollment of incarcerated learners, updating them in a timely manner when there are withdrawalsCoordinate with UVA SCPS to provide updated material as needed for contractual updates with the VADOCWork with Darden Finance to provide material invoices once a semester to UVA SCPSDevelop and maintain relationships with local community colleges that provide education in the same correctional facilities as Darden PREPAttend meetings with the VADOC and VA Higher Education for Incarcerated Students Consortium to stay up to date on state level news related to higher education in prison

Educational and Professional Experience:

High School Diploma and at least four years of experience required.
