Data Engineer

The University of Virginia School of Data Science (SDS) is seeking an experienced and capable Data Engineer. This role will be in a unique position to build the overall data infrastructure and reporting capabilities from the ground up. They will seek out and work with data owners to import data from across the University, build data infrastructure to combine and maintain data, build out data sets and models for consumption, build pipelines for business intelligence, and build out business intelligence solutions for use across the school.

The Data Engineer will report to the Director of Information Technology and Strategy and drive data driven processes and data driven decision making across the School of Data Science by providing data that not only supports the first school of data science in the nation, but in a way that exemplifies the use of our own data. Responsibilities include:

Collaborate with data stakeholders to understand the overall data landscape and build ways to import relevant data.Design, create, optimize, and maintain data infrastructure including data pipelines, databases, and ETL processes to manage data from multiple sources for analytic and operational use cases.Build and maintain data warehouses or data lakes to ensure data is stored in a structured, efficient, and usable manner.Integrate data from various sources including UVA and internal SDS data, ensuring consistency, quality, and reliability.Design and model data and database schemas to support data usage through applications and business intelligence tools.Implement data governance and security measures to ensure compliance with organizational standards.Work closely with stakeholders to understand data requirements and deliver data driven solutions for use at SDS.Build and maintain business intelligence analytics, reporting, data visualizations, and data solutions to support the school’s wide range of data needs.Collaborate and work closely with colleagues on IT related projects as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Master's Degree required; Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for Degree.
Experience: 2 years relevant experience. Good understanding of relational databases. Proficient with programming language. Intermediate experience with organizing and analyzing large datasets. Proficient with Microsoft Excel and Word. Able to learn new software as-required for the position.
Licensure: None required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with the Microsoft power platform including Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, and other tools in the power platform ecosystem.Experience building out dashboards and visualizations using Power BI.Experience with overall security governance and implementation as it relates to business intelligence solutions.Anticipated hiring range: $108,000 – 118,000
