Data Engineering Director

Lead the development of our data architecture and execute our analytics strategy. This role blends strategic leadership with direct execution, driving data-driven decision-making across the organization. Reporting to the VP of Data Analytics, you will collaborate with IT, cloud providers, and product teams to deliver analytics capabilities while implementing best practices for data engineering.

This is a hybrid position which will require the candidate to report and work from the office three days a week. Therefore, interested candidates should be within a 50-minute radius from Temple, TX.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS / PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Select, train, and supervise Information Systems resources and staff support resources.Develop plans for his/her group consistent with the development/maintenance planning cycle. Included in these responsibilities are project plans, assistance in budget preparation and annual specific objectives.Conduct performance appraisals for personnel in a timely fashion and initiates salary administration action when appropriate.Review summary project control information on a regular basis to assure that projects are on schedule and institute corrective action when required.Allocate development resources to support project schedules.Interface with management on a regular basis to establish project priorities and to resolve systems development issues.Develop and implement the data engineering strategy aligned with company goals. Lead, mentor, and grow a team of data engineers, fostering innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning.Oversee the migration to the Fabric platform, ensuring a seamless transition with minimal downtime and data integrity.Design, develop, and implement data pipelines using Azure/Fabric, integrating tools like dbt, Airflow, PowerBI, and potentially Cognos.Work closely with Data Science, Analytics, Product Development, and IT teams to ensure data engineering initiatives support business objectives. Communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels.Ensure data quality, security, and compliance with industry standards. Implement best practices for data governance and metadata management.Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends, continuously optimizing data engineering processes and tools.Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM SKILLS AND QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s Degree, master’s degree preferred.Have 10 years of broad-based experience in specific and related disciplines of the business, including at least 5 years of progressive leadership experience.Proficiency in Azure cloud technologies, including Azure Data Factory, Microsoft Fabric Data Platform, Python, and PySpark. Experience with Airflow and PowerBI is highly desirable.Heavy industry experience and a detailed understanding of both the technical and business processes for a large organization in the grocery, convenience, or fast-food industry. Experience with AI/ML, including building or working with machine learning models, data pipelines, generative AI, and Large Language Models (LLMs). Knowledge of NLP, Deep Learning, and Knowledge Graphs is a plus.Strong leadership skills, with experience building and scaling high-performing teams. Excellent critical thinking skills, with a focus on innovation.Exceptional ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.Ability to travel to divisions to support in upgrades, new implementations, creation or opening of new divisions. Comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities and drive results.Strong knowledge of Microsoft office suit such as Excel, Work, Access, Project, and PowerPoint.Knowledge of Microsoft Visio or other flowcharting tool knowledge.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Office environment.Occasional travel is required – less than 10%.
