You’ll be joining the Data Platform Team, which is responsible for building the next-generation data infrastructure to support SumUp's data-driven approach, helping millions of businesses thrive. Our goal is to develop reusable tools that enable automated and scalable infrastructure creation for distributed domains. Our team consists of three product-focused subteams:
Data Streaming: Ensures a highly reliable and secure Kafka and Stream Processing Infrastructure.
Data Movement: Manages our Data Ingestion and Extraction infrastructure for various data storage solutions.
Data Gateway: Oversees our Storage and Access Layers, enabling SumUppers to access diverse data needs.
As we guide SumUp toward a self-service, scalable infrastructure, your leadership will be instrumental in aligning technical vision with business goals, fostering collaboration across diverse teams, and managing relationships with stakeholders at all levels. Your ability to adapt communication to different audiences – from technical teams to senior leadership – will ensure the success of data initiatives that empower engineers, analysts, and data scientists to work independently with data resources.
What you’ll do:Lead with impact: Drive technical discussions and facilitate the collection of requirements with Backend, Data, Business, and Leadership teams for real-time data use cases.
Stakeholder management: Act as a bridge between engineering teams, product stakeholders, and leadership, ensuring clear communication, alignment of priorities, and timely execution of initiatives.
Technical leadership: Provide technical direction and mentorship to team members while contributing hands-on to the next phase of Kafka and Streaming Infrastructure development.
Strategic decision-making: Guide adoption of Kafka and Stream Processing technologies across multiple tribes and squads, driving company-wide impact.
Quality assurance and reliability: Ensure high-quality, reliable infrastructure services by defining and monitoring SLAs, and implementing best practices.

Deliver results: Efficiently guide projects through all phases, from Proof-of-Concept to full-scale Production.
You’ll be a great fit for this role if you have:Proven engineering leadership experience, including managing technical teams and mentoring engineers.
Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, communicate with leadership, and adapt messaging to technical and non-technical audiences.
Hands-on experience maintaining critical data infrastructure, particularly Kafka and stream processing services such as Flink, Spark, or other stateful distributed systems.
Proficiency in at least one of our primary programming languages: Go, Python, or Java.
Familiarity with observability tools (Grafana, Prometheus, Honeycomb) to ensure system reliability and performance.
Experience implementing SRE principles.
A strong understanding of cloud infrastructure and networking (AWS or GCP).
