Data Science Manager

Under the direction of the Director, Financial Planning & Analysis, the Manager, Data Science leads the operations of the Data Science team and ensures the optimization of processes surrounding data science, data mining, and data engineering within the Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) department. This position oversees the review, design, and implementation of predictive models, data visualizations, machine learning, artificial intelligence, automation algorithms and data mining. This role holds responsibility for understanding and modeling the complex relationship of gaming related math and customer dimensions, as well as reporting on the efficacy of floor optimization, promotional campaigns and enterprise initiatives. The Manager, Data Science also collaborates, initiates, and supports opportunities with other functions by championing the goals and priorities of the Tribe in a manner that faithfully reflects and upholds the Tribes vision, mission and values.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1. Manages the operations of the Data Science team. Researches, evaluates, and analyzes reports and results of team members.  

2. Collaborates with FP&A and organizational stakeholders to advance the use and application of data science, while driving the adoption of the infrastructure and methodologies appropriate to equip the Data Science team with all necessary tools for success. Partners with IT professionals to build, maintain, and grow the enterprise’s analytics capabilities. 

3. Utilizes advanced mathematical and statistical concepts and theories to analyze and collect data from disparate sources and construct solutions to enterprise problems. 

4. Constructs predictive models and algorithms to support data analysis functions; verifies model and algorithm effectiveness based on actual results. 

5. Completes complex statistical analysis on business data to identify, validate and quantify trends or patterns within the organization. 

6. Interprets and communicates insights and findings from data science to department and enterprise leadership. 

7. Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department and assumes other responsibilities, duties, tasks and assignments that contribute to the mitigation or response to any public health emergency. 

Supervisory Responsibilities

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.   Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning reviewing and directing work; evaluating and appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Makes hiring decisions and designs individual development plans with succession planning in mind for all key roles. 

Education/Experience/Qualifications 

Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science, Business, Economics, Finance or related field required. 

Master’s degree in related field preferred. 

Minimum of three (3) years of experience in data science and/or data analytics is required.  

Minimum three (3) years of Supervisory experience required.  

Related, relevant, and/or direct experience may be considered in lieu of minimum educational requirements indicated above. 

Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) is required. 

Experience working with relational databases and enterprise reporting tools is required. 

Strong leadership and people management skills required with good motivational and collaboration emphasis; communicates change effectively, overcomes resistance and builds commitment. 

Ability to delegate, multi-task, lead and prioritize effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with demonstrated organizational and time management skills.  

Must maintain a strict level of confidentiality and act in a manner consistent with all legal and regulatory requirements and in compliance with relevant laws and regulations. 

Must be personable and professional, capable of using caution and discretion in communication.  

Certificates/Licenses/Registrations

At the discretion of the San Manuel Tribal Gaming Commission, you may be required to obtain and maintain a gaming license. 

A qualified candidate/employee must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record as determined by the company’s insurance carrier.
