What this position entails

The Database Reliability Engineer will be the go-to authority for PostgreSQL database management and optimization. This role requires deep technical expertise in PostgreSQL, alongside extensive experience with AWS services, IAM security, DynamoDB, OpenSearch, DocumentDB, and other data platform technologies. You will be responsible for database design, implementation, security, performance tuning, and integration with various data technologies.

What you’ll be doing

Observability

Design DB observability strategy and help implement reusable patterns to meet varying levels of required visibility Create observability dashboards that provide real-time visibility into key database metrics and health indicators Recommend best practices for monitoring, tracing, and logging Cloud (AWS) databases Establish anomaly detection/alerting and help tune DBs for performance and cost

Database Design and Implementation:

Architect, implement, and help maintain PostgreSQL databases on AWS Optimize database schema, indexing, and query performance for high availability and scalability Ensure robust security measures are in place to protect sensitive data

AWS Integration:

Implement backup, recovery, and monitoring solutions using AWS tools Ensure compliance with AWS best practices and security policies Recommend storage patterns and policies to optimize cost savings

IAM Security:

Implement and help manage AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) policies for secure access control Conduct regular security audits and ensure adherence to security protocols Collaborate with security teams to address vulnerabilities and enhance security measures

Database development

Extensive experience in writing highly performant PL/pgSQL Ability to proactively diagnose performance issues and refactor code to be more performant

Support Non-Relational Data Platforms

Optimize data models and query performance for DynamoDB Integrate DynamoDB with other AWS services and third-party applications Deploy, manage, and optimize OpenSearch clusters for search and analytics use cases Design, implement, and maintain DocumentDB instances

Data Platform Integration:

Facilitate data integration and ETL processes between various data sources and targets Implement data governance and data quality best practices Ensure seamless integration and data synchronization between various data platforms Work with additional data technologies such as Redis, Kafka, Amazon SQS, etc. Familiar with Terraform and infrastructure as code concepts Familiarity with setting up dashboards and alerting in Datadog and AWS

Troubleshooting and Support:

Provide expert-level support for database-related issues Perform root cause analysis and implement long-term solutions for recurring problems Collaborate with development teams to optimize application performance

Mentorship and Training:

Mentor and train database administrators and developers Develop and deliver training sessions and documentation on best practices and new technologies

What we need

5+ years of experience working with PostgreSQL databases, including advanced features and performance tuning Extensive experience with AWS services, particularly RDS, EC2, S3, Lambda, and DynamoDB Strong understanding of AWS IAM security best practices and implementation Proficient in other data technologies such as /Valkey, Kafka, Amazon SQS, OpenSearch, DocumentDB. etc. Strong understanding of database design principles, normalization, and indexing Experience with database monitoring and performance tuning tools Proficient in scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or similar Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment AWS certifications (such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AWS Certified Database - Specialty, or AWS Certified Security - Specialty) are a plus

Location

This position will be based out of the Milliman office in Brookfield, WI; however, this position is open to remote work. Applicants must be willing to travel to the Milliman office in Brookfield, WI as needed.

The base salary for the position will vary with the candidate’s qualifications and experience. The salary range is $109,000 - $248,000, depending on relevant factors, including but not limited to education, skills, certifications, and location. If overall experience is less than 10 years the range would be $109,000 to $222,000; for experience of greater than 10 years, the range would be $122,000 to $248,000. In addition, we offer a performance-based bonus plan, profit sharing, and generous benefits.
