Work Hours: Part time hours in June for training, then up to 40 hours per week Monday – Friday starting June 23 until August 29, 2025

Day Camp Instructor Swim Lessons position teaches and examines using the YMCA Swim Lesson program curriculum and resources. Instructors develop weekly lesson plans that identify the unique needs of the participants. Instructors maintain a safe environment at all times. When this position is not teaching, they will act as a Lifeguard. The Day Camp Lifeguard position maintains a safe aquatic environment at all times, including meeting regulatory and YMCA requirements.

In this role, you will:    

Ensure all safety and life guarding procedures are adhered to, and in the event of an emergency respond as trained by the Association and the Lifesaving Society Deliver course content and examines participants following established YMCA criteria Develop and implement sequential weekly lesson plans Recognize participant learning styles and delivers content accordingly Communicate (verbal and written) child’s progress to parents/guardians in report cards Maintain accurate, up to date weekly progress sheets and records for participants Set up and take down recreational, program and other equipment as required – at the same time checking that equipment is safe and in good repair Ensure qualifications and certifications as required by the YMCA and regulatory standards are current at all times Complete a safety check of lifesaving equipment prior to each shift Responsible for attending all staff trainings and meetings; arriving on time, and actively participating and contributing to the development of all camp staff Ensure Health & Safety procedures are being followed and maintained and contribute to the cleaning, safety and maintenance to camp sites Act as a positive role model for the campers and fellow staff through embodying the YMCA values, policies and procedures, Day Camp conditions of employment/guidelines and the Ontario Camping Association standards

You bring:    

Minimum age 16 years old by June 1st Current Certifications in the following Lifesaving Society awards: National Lifeguard (NL) Award, Standard First Aid & CPR level “C” Current YMCA or Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor certification Previous experience lifeguarding and instructing swim lessons an asset YMCA Day Camp experience is an asset Ability to use frequent light to medium physical effort: Lifting up to 50 lbs. by bending, carrying, pushing and pulling Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and in a team environment  Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with families, staff and volunteers Excellent communication skills and ability to lead a group of children Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and building a sense of belonging
