The dean of the School of Criminal Justice is the chief executive officer, overseeing all academic, fiscal, and administrative affairs of the school. The dean bears responsibility for engaging faculty to set an overall vision and direction for the school that will motivate and inspire faculty and students. With a school budget of approximately $12 million, the dean is charged with generating and managing the resources of the school and for understanding the varying needs of the degree programs represented within it. The dean is responsible for recruiting and retaining a faculty of international stature and – in collaboration with the SCJ faculty chair – mentors and helps develop faculty.
The dean reports to the executive vice chancellor and provost and is a central figure in the overall administration of Rutgers University–Newark. The dean is also a member of the Rutgers University Administrative Council, a group of university leaders that includes the president, academic deans,chancellors, vice presidents, and other senior administrators, and is expected to build relationships and appropriate collaborations with deans and other leaders across the university. The dean is also responsible for actively engaging in and with Newark and promoting RU–N’s community engagement model. In all these endeavors, the dean builds on the Rutgers University–Newark legacy of being one of the most diverse campuses and fostering a culture of inclusion.
The dean provides strategic vision and operational leadership to all aspects of the academic and
scholarly program for the school. As such, this role includes overall responsibility for defining the
school’s strategic priorities, developed in collaboration with faculty; developing and continually refining academic programs of the highest quality; attracting superb students; supporting school-based research; forging academic links with other schools and departments within the university; providing leadership to the staff of the school; and maintaining productive relationships with alumni, community partners, and donors, and local, national, and global communities. Additional responsibilities include budget planning and oversight; advocating internally and externally for the school; working collaboratively across the campus to advance the goals of the school and the university; and garnering the resources and support that will enable the school to succeed. Finally, the dean oversees the development of leadership capacity in the school and the mentoring of junior faculty.
