Dental Assistant (DA) – Physician Office - Pediatric Dental - Richmond, VA
PRIMARY FUNCTION/GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The Dental Assistant is responsible for performing various dental procedures, increasing professional skills, taking on the responsibility for training of new clinical staff and externs that are pursuing continued education in Pediatric Dentistry. This staff member will accompany the dentists and physicians to the OR, ED, PICU, clinics and outreach programs. This person assists staff dentists in the performance of pediatric dentistry which includes, but is not limited to, diagnostic, operative, preventative, sedation, and other dental/surgical procedures during examinations and treatment of patients. This staff member will be the lead trainer for all clinical and office staff as well as hospital staff on dental imaging and assisting procedures.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Performs coordinator duties.: Manages patient appointment schedule in cooperation with the dental clinic faculty/residents; Makes assignments for dental assistants and oversees daily operations; Works in conjunction with department manager regarding all matters related to the dental clinic; Woks in conjunction with Medical Director and Chief resident regarding all clinical matters; Oversees supply order process; Prepare/reviews dental assistant 4-week schedulePrepares for procedures/exams: Greets and escorts patient to operatory area; Prepares patient, equipment and supplies for procedures and exams; Obtains chart. Uses suction devices, water spray cotton rolls, holders, cheek/tongue retractors to keep oral operating area clean during dental procedures; Prepares restorative materials and dental cements to be used during dental procedures; Takes and develops intra-oral radiographs; Assists Dentist with oral exams, cleanings, extractions, root canal therapy and fillings.Provides education and instruction; Gives post-procedure instruction to patient and/or significant other; Educates regarding proper oral hygiene and overall dental preventative care; Maintains dental instruments; Washes and soaks instruments in a solution before processing in ultrasonic cleaner; Sets up instruments for sterilization by packaging, labeling and dating; Processes instruments and transports instruments to and from Central Supply; Maintains disinfecting solutions according to protocolDirects patients to financial counselor as necessary; Assists residents with completion of billing form; Performs general clerical duties as needed; Files patient and other records; Prepares and maintains charts; Maintains dental instruments.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Vocational Technical Completion of Dental AssistantBasic Life Support CPR American Heart AssociationPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience within a physician practice setting.Working knowledge of medical record format and content of patient records.Ability to review records, read physician documentation and verify patient identification.Good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with practice managers and other medical group staff/leadership.Work requires a high level of accuracy with the ability to concentrate on detailed information for extended periods of time.OTHER FUNCTIONS:
