GENERIC SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, provide and promote preventative oral care. Examine, note all oral conditions, debride and polish patients’ teeth. Recommends techniques to maintain and promote good oral health for clinical, research and teaching purposes. Assists staff and students in treatment of patients. Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Maintains equipment and records.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
(i) Carries out preliminary examination of patients. Provides preventive and curative care as prescribed. Demonstrates techniques concerning oral hygiene procedures and post-operative care. Provides information about other health services.
(ii.) Takes intra and extra oral radiographs including CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) and intra and extra oral photographs. Proficient in the use of hand, power, and ultrasonic instruments for debriding and polishing teeth and the use of radiographic equipment.
(iii.) Prepares and sterilizes instruments and materials. Assists staff and students in treatment and surgery of patients.
(iv.) Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Provides technical guidance and demonstration of work methods, the use of equipment and techniques, and treatment protocols. Participates in technical evaluation of students.
(v.) Demonstrates to students how to take radiographs, collect data for periodontal evaluation, debride, and polish teeth and surrounding tissues.
(vi.) Collaborates with unit supervisor and makes recommendations concerning equipment, work methods, and effective procedures to ensure the efficient and optimal treatment of patients and use of equipment. Maintains computerized information systems and participates in their development to improve efficiency within the unit.
(vii.) Ensures compliance with safety regulations, including infection control guidelines, in the use of equipment and treatment of patients. Ensures proper storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
(viii.) Maintains equipment and performs minor repairs. Arranges for servicing.
(ix.) Maintains inventory. Recommends and purchases equipment and material.
(x.) Maintains records and files. Prepares reports.
(xi.) Keeps abreast of new developments in the field to update skills and knowledge.
