Australia Assists is an Australian Government program that deploys skilled humanitarian specialists to support multilateral agencies, governments, civil society and communities to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters and conflict. Australia Assists’ Goal is to: Save lives, alleviate suffering, and maintain human dignity during and in the aftermath of conflict, disasters and other humanitarian crises, and strengthen preparedness for the occurrence of such situations. The program’s Objective is: Targeted deployment of humanitarian expertise that meets the priorities and needs of Australia's multilateral, bilateral and civil society partners and advances Australia's international humanitarian priorities.
The Role:
The Deployments Manager is responsible for overseeing the end-to-end deployment lifecycle, ensuring a seamless and responsive experience for deployees on active assignments. This includes managing safety and security, mobilisation and travel logistics, and the provision of necessary assets and equipment.
Working closely with the Operations Lead and DFAT, the Deployments Manager will lead the development of a Deployment Prioritisation Framework, streamlining processes to effectively respond to partner requests for surge personnel. This role plays a critical part in supporting partners and deployees in disaster and conflict preparedness, response, and recovery, ensuring rapid and efficient deployment to meet urgent operational needs.
Key responsibilities
Develop and implement a Deployment Prioritisation Framework in collaboration with DFAT, ensuring evidence-based and transparent deployment recommendations. Manage the Rapid Response mechanism, providing senior oversight and direct engagement with DFAT to coordinate timely and effective assistance requests. Lead the annual deployment planning process, aligning priorities with early partner engagement to maximize responsiveness and impact. Oversee the full deployment lifecycle, ensuring efficient onboarding, safe deployment, performance monitoring, and strong partner support, while integrating GEDSI, CCDR, and capacity-strengthening objectives. Ensure high-quality reporting, capturing lessons from deployments to inform continuous improvement and capacity development. Manage subcontractor relationships, ensuring consistent support, value for money, and compliance across all Australia Assists deployment types. Lead a geographically dispersed team, overseeing logistics and deployment coordination while proactively addressing performance shortfalls. Enhance in-region capability by leveraging skilled deployees and facilitating rapid engagement of local resources when required. Collaborate with HR and Risk Managers to maintain and review the Rapid Response roster, manage risks, and uphold compliance with health, safety, and security policies. Ensure responsible financial management, maintaining ethical, efficient, and compliant use of funds within budget and procurement guidelines. Contribute to program performance assessments (PPA & APA), ensuring high-quality results with a rating of 4 or above. Promote health, safety, and security compliance, ensuring incidents are managed effectively and policies are upheld across the program.Selection criteria
Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field such as international development, public administration, project management, business administration, or social sciences. Minimum of five years in a senior management role within a project-based logistics function, ideally in international development or humanitarian contexts. Proven experience in developing, implementing, and managing tailored end-to-end deployment lifecycles. Expertise in coordinating large-scale, geographically dispersed mobilisations within complex stakeholder environments. Strong track record in budget management, performance monitoring, and using data-driven insights to inform decision-making. Experience leading and managing teams across multiple geographic regions. Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with experience working with government agencies, NGOs, donors, and the private sector High cultural awareness and the ability to work effectively in diverse, multicultural settings.
