Deputy Engineering Manager – Fleet Information Environment Modernisation

Our Technical, Advisory, and Capability (TAC) practice and Team Downer (the prime Major Service Provider (MSP)) deliver above-the-line consulting services and Integrated Work Packages across the Department of Defence, leveraging innovative approaches such as mission and digital engineering to enable the successful delivery of critical Defence programs. This includes engagement with key areas across Defence including Defence Digital Group (DDG), Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG), and the Navy, Army, and Air Force.

We are currently seeking a Deputy Engineering Manager for the next phase of a Fleet Information Environment (FIE) Modernisation program delivering a cyber-hardened, integrated, sustainable, and networked mission system that enables the Royal Australian Navy to 'fight and win at sea'. The aim of the FIE modernisation project is to deliver to Navy a suite of integrated ICT systems, applications and infrastructure (Minerva) that supports both deployed operations and day-to-day administrative activities, where ships and submarine crews are located. 

The position will undertake the Deputy Engineering Manager role functions, performing the following activities:

Support the progression and subsequent approval of a Request for Problem Resolution (RPR) via the Naval Engineering Processes as required for the respective Navy platforms. Support the development and execution of an agreed detailed plan for specific Navy platforms to ensure the requirements, deliverables and progress of the project are completed in alignment with the platforms respective SPO and principal Engineers requirements. Develop and maintain a constructive, open and transparent working relationship with the key stakeholders (i.e. CASG-SPO, ISSC, NI&IWB, etc) for the specifically allocated Navy Platforms. Work closely with the Installation Managers to ensure the allocated Navy platforms is approved in advance of the planned deployment. Provide support to the Engineering Workforce to ensure that the required engineering deliverables of the allocated navy platforms is planned well in advance of the required delivery dates. Identify the engineering risks, issues, and opportunities for the specifically allocated Navy Platforms.

Required skills and experience

Relevant tertiary qualification i.e. Bachelor of Engineering. Experience working in Defence as a Deputy Engineering Manager or equivalent role. DDG, FFH platform knowledge and experience. Military/APS/Contractor experience working with Ship Class SPO’s and ISSC’s. Demonstrated experience and knowledge in Defence Capability Lifecycle Projects.  Strong communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills with ability to present and engage with both internal and external stakeholders and Projects. 

Desirable skills and experience

Experience within Defence Maritime Projects delivering new capability to the Navy. Demonstrated experience in Navy Engineering processes. Previous experience working with the Australian Defence Force (ADF) in the highly secure environment.
