This position is non-sworn while attending and participating in formal and comprehensive training in a California POST Certified Law Enforcement Academy. The trainee level is distinguished from our Deputy Sheriff I in that the Deputy Sheriff Trainee position is a non-sworn classification which is not considered a certified peace officer. Upon satisfactory completion of the 16-week training and graduation from the academy, the trainee will be promoted to Deputy Sheriff I (Sworn Peace Officer). Failure to complete training and graduation from the academy will result in termination. The minimum age requirement for Sworn Peace Officers is 21 years of age. Candidates must meet this age requirement to be eligible for appointment into the Deputy Sheriff I position at time of graduation from the academy. Completion of additional coursework from an accredited college or university in law enforcement or a related field is desirable, but not required.
