Job Overview:

The design team plays a pivotal role in offering creative solutions to brand, innovation, and culture challenges. Whether it’s perfecting the cadence of a key presentation or discovering a new path to engage users in an online experience, we lend the best of design thinking to the rest of our practices, from Strategy to Organizational Engagement, Innovation, New Business, and internal or marketing initiatives.

As a Designer Director at Lippincott, you will work with teammates to help develop thoughtful, beautiful design solutions. You will design innovative, integrated solutions across a range of static, dynamic and interactive media (print, digital, 3D, motion and environmental). You will be both conceptually and idea driven, focused on forging meaningful connections with consumers and businesses across a broad range of media. In addition to developing great design solutions, you will also help manage projects by coordinating with team members — both junior and senior — and with clients. This role provides the opportunity to begin developing leadership skills and a unique, discerning point of view as you contribute to the work.

Key responsibilities:

Design Creatively and Strategically

Leveraging firm resources, initiate problem solving and develop preliminary concepts into refined, comprehensive design solutions

Help guide the design development process from start to finish — participate in team ideation, help advance all concepts, and check accuracy and quality of all deliverables to highest standards

Develop and write detailed and organized design and branding guidelines

Research and Build Ideas

Conduct design research, contributing to communications audits and moodboard creation

Stay up-to-date on trends and new techniques in the design world, as well as best practices in user experience and interface design, integrating those findings and understanding into the projects

Probe more deeply into concepts and design solutions when confronted with inconsistent and challenging findings

Develop case studies and public reference, including storyboarding, gathering materials, updating exhibits, etc.

Manage Time and Projects

Prioritize tasks to meet needs and deadlines across multiple projects and multiple teams

Anticipate challenges that may affect project timelines and address with Partners on the project

Work within budget and time constraints

Participate in managing projects as required, taking a leadership role at times and prioritizing the workload for others

Document and archive all work and files logically and in a timely manner for team/studio access

Begin to act as a mentor to junior staff, providing design direction and assisting in their development

Begin to assist in recruitment efforts

Communicate and Collaborate

Communicate project objectives clearly to team members and clients

Clearly articulate design ideas, share research findings and explain thought process to team members —both in writing and in person

Constructively participate in team ideation and design critiques

Share specific and actionable feedback to team members

Assist in producing and occasionally delivering client presentations

Be involved in maintaining the client relationship, acting as a Lippincott representative, working with and influencing junior client contacts, participating in client calls and meetings, and gathering and communicating feedback to the team

Assist in producing new business proposals

We look for you to:

Be Knowledgeable

A design-related Bachelor’s degree or equivalent portfolio (postgraduate degree a plus)

5+ years of graphic design experience in a professional setting

A proven ability to apply basic design principles to creative work across a range of experiences (print, digital, 3D, motion and environmental)

The ability to incorporate inputs from strategy, research and other disciplines into design development

The ability to think creatively while building on and relating work to past experience

An understanding of interaction design and development processes, including information design and content architecture

Knowledge of motion/film and animation a plus

Be Skilled

The ability to design consistently across a range of static, dynamic and interactive media (print, digital and web, three-dimensional, environmental, etc.)

Extensive technical ability with Adobe Suite and familiarity with MS Office; a working knowledge of digital prototyping and UX wire framing is a plus; a working knowledge of motion or film editing is also a plus

With a basic understanding of color management and media requirements, the ability to prepare production-ready assets and to package files for distribution and digital implementation
