Design Manager

PURPOSE 

 

The design manager is responsible for the work originated and generated by personnel within the Design department.   

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

 

Manages the work of employees that are using computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering and design tasks.  Supervises daily layout of design work performed and ensures timely completion.  Originates and checks layout and design drawings for structural wood products manufactured or supplied by the company.  Reviews new orders and estimates completion time.  Assigns appropriate design personnel to complete the work.  Assists the truss technician to ensure the products supplied satisfy the goals of a Builders FirstSource design department – ensuring correct geometry, structural integrity, and economy.  Performs some layout and design work daily.  Reviews the lead times of the design office and coordinates shifting of design work with other design locations when required.  Communicates with contractors, company sales representatives, and building designers as required to obtain information for timely drawing completion.  Staffs the design department to meet company objectives.  Administers new employee training to ensure familiarity with company products and processes.  Reviews work that is generated.  Promotes and encourages the use of new company procedures, technology, and goals.  Reviews latest design software and assesses whether it should be utilized at facility.  Other duties as assigned

This job has no supervisory responsibilities. 

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  

 

Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Previous managerial and Design experience required.  Level 3 design Certification required.  Knowledge of wood frame construction.  Must demonstrate excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to handle multiple priorities. 

 

 

 

COMPETENCIES 

 

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. 

 

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. 

 

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
