Designer (12-month Contract)

The salary range for this position begins at $54,305.

Changing the world, one book at a time.

As a team of dedicated book-loving professionals, we discover, shape, and share content that nurtures thoughts, dreams, and conversations around the globe, ensuring that new and established voices are heard.

We are looking for a Designer to join our team who is collaborative, creative and ideas-driven (12-month contract).

Do you have a sixth sense for good book design and what captures a reader’s attention in bookstores, online, and across social media platforms? Are you eager to learn, and thrive on feedback? Are you a creative problem solver who obsesses over the fundamentals of design and typography? Do you enjoy illustrating, photography or other forms of creativity?

If this describes you, consider joining us on an exciting journey as we write new chapters of Penguin Random House Canada’s culture and employee experience story together.

Your contribution to the story:

At Penguin Random House Canada, we house an award-winning team of designers who are passionate about having the best-dressed books for our authors, readers, and retailers. In a production environment, you will deliver exceptional design solutions across a full range of books while gaining an in-depth understanding of the design process, the complete package from concept development to final bound book.

Reporting to the Creative Director, you will collaborate closely with production, editorial, sales and other key stakeholders to design the best books for some of the world’s most renowned Canadian authors.

What you’ll do:

Review and dissect creative briefs, ask questions to understand the needs of your stakeholders, and provide a variety of ideas and solutions. Design covers and interiors of books based on creative vision, sound design principles and stakeholder feedback. Leverage originality and strategic thinking to help connect readers to our books. Share ideas and inspiration within the design team in weekly meetings. Extend designs of the printed book cover into audio and e-book formats. Bring a creative flexibility to design across various book categories. Use diplomacy and tact to build and maintain relationships across the organization. Present cover designs to key stakeholders in weekly meetings. Prepare and troubleshoot press-ready files.

Experience and knowledge you’ll bring (qualifications):

A minimum of three years of education or experience in print design or a related field. Intermediate-level skills in Adobe Creative Suite for Mac. In-depth prepress knowledge including colour correcting. Exceptional understanding of branding, design and typography fundamentals. Hands-on artistic talent that extends beyond software applications. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with presentation experience. An effective and proactive approach to problem-solving and strong attention to detail.  A practical knowledge of Microsoft Office suite and online collaboration tools.  Capacity to learn quickly and thrive in an ever-changing high-pressure production environment.   Proven organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet tight deadlines and budgets without sacrificing attention to detail.  Highly developed customer service skills with a proven ability to work independently and collaboratively.   An inclusive approach to your work, supported by cultural competency and a proven ability to collaborate with people from across a wide range of diverse backgrounds.  A proactive mindset coupled with an ability to work both independently and as part of a larger team. Enhanced knowledge, awareness, and experience with the culture and history of any community that has faced marginalization is considered a plus.  And of course, a love for books!

We are actively seeking to add team members from communities with lived experiences of marginalization and underrepresentation. We respect and value each individual and their lived experiences and are committed to creating a more diverse team and establishing a culture of belonging. If you self-identify as Black, Indigenous, a person of colour, a member of the LGBTQIA2S+ community or another marginalized group, we strongly encourage you to apply.

This role requires a minimum set three-days per week in-office as per our schedule located at our Toronto office at 320 Front Street West. As such, candidates need to reside within commuting distance of our office.

To apply, please submit a cover letter, resume and a sample of your design work formatted in a PDF or provided as a link to your portfolio by Friday, February 28, 2025. We appreciate the interest of all applicants; however, only those candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
