Job Summary

The Life Sciences Institute (LSI) is looking for a Desktop Support Specialist Associate to join our professional staff. You will work as part of the Information Technology (IT) team that provides computing and technology support for faculty, researchers, staff, and students in addition to administering central LSI services. You will be responsible for desktop and event support and report to the LSI Desktop Support Supervisor.

Responsibilities*Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot: Macintosh and Windows desktop computersNetwork printers and peripheral devices on Windows and Macintosh systemsDesktop productivity and scientific softwareComputer hardware and software used with PC controlled scientific instrumentsReceive, tag, and track ordered hardware and software using the LSI inventory systemWork with software, hardware, and scientific instrument vendors on support, troubleshooting, and warranty repairsWork with staff and faculty to specify or customize computer hardware suitable for the U-M and LSI computing environmentProvide technology assistance to members of the LSI communityAdvise and train computing system users in the capabilities of LSI and U-M resources and software packagesSetup and install LSI and U-M resources (printers, storage, VPN) on LSI managed and personally owned computersHelp maintain the security of desktop computers through patching, updates, and maintenance of virus and spyware protection softwareHardware lifecycle trackingWrite and revise general documentation describing features, capabilities and procedures of LSI and U-M systemsOther responsibilities as assignedRequired Qualifications*An Associate degree focused on computer-related coursework or an equivalent combination of education and computer support experiencePrior experience working with colleagues of varying technological skillsMinimum of 1 year experience creating documentation for information and technology processes and servicesMinimum of 1 year experience managing unique computer hardware and software inventoryComfortable working in a wet laboratory environmentDesired Qualifications*Experience supporting both Windows and Macintosh environmentsFamiliarity with Microsoft Windows systems management concepts and printing systemsKnowledge of network troubleshooting and conceptsDemonstrated troubleshooting abilities including good use of reference tools and self-instructionFamiliarity with desktop productivity and scientific softwareKnowledge of wet laboratory safety best practicesFamiliarity with Linux and High-Performance ComputingFamiliarity with computer controlled scientific instrumentsModes of Work

Additional Information

You will have a work location at the Life Sciences Institute on the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan campus. Under current institute policy, a hybrid schedule of on-site and remote work is allowable, subject to business needs requiring on-site presence.
