Diagnostic Medical Sonographer

Description:Diagnostic Medical Sonographer General Vascular Full-time 40 hoursAfternoon Shift (2:30pm-11:00pm)                                                                              

The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer II is responsible for reviewing the Physician Order and reason for exam and prepares the patient for the exam/procedure.  The Sonographer performs a variety of specialized medical ultrasound examinations/procedures to obtain high quality images for diagnostic interpretation in accordance with departmental protocols.  Sonographer II also performs vascular exams under the direct supervision of an RVT or Radiologist.  The Sonographer may also assist the physician with US-guided procedures.  The Sonographer works closely with the Ultrasound leadership and Radiologists. The Sonographer performs a variety of technical procedures that will require independent judgment, with integrity and initiative.

Minimum Education, Licensure / Certification and Experience Required:

Completion of an accredited Medical Sonography program.Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.Registered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) with a certification in ABD or OB/GYN and Vascular OR RVT Registry-eligible with certification within one year of date of hire.One year as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is preferred.Willing to train in Breast Imaging.

Special Skill / Aptitudes

Must have in-depth knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy.Must have the ability to produce and evaluate quality imagesIn-depth knowledge of cross-section anatomy, including abdomen, gynecology, superficial parts and vascular.Stays current in all registry modalities (RDMS, RVT).Excellent customer service orientation skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups.

Duties / Responsibilities:

Responsible for interpreting the physician's orders and scanning areas of the body using proper positioning techniques.Demonstrates the ability to scan patients, provide a high quality image that meets the expectations of the department protocols.Prepare the sterile field and adeptly assist the physicians with the procedures, such as, but not limited to biopsies, cyst punctures, and drainage of abscesses.Relays preliminary reports from the radiologist to physicians or nursing units.Initiates records for all patients having ultrasound scanning including patient personal data and test ordered.Ability to operate the ultrasonic scanner and the workstation.Provides physical comfort and emotional support for patients.Transports patients to the Radiology Department and physically assists patients from wheelchairs and stretchers to tables used for scanning.Provides information to nursing units about correct patient preparation and to coordinate scanning with other tests orders.Contacts physicians' offices to clarify orders and to obtain additional information.  Contacts various outreach hospital personnel to obtain information and to clarify schedules.Performs duties within established ultrasound testing practices/procedures under the direction of the Radiologist.Submits reporting of in and outpatient scans to provide accurate data of volume of tests and trends for future planning.Attends mandatory meeting and in-services as required by the Hospital and/or the Department of Radiology.Cleans and maintains equipment.Maintains up-to-date knowledge of ultrasound scanning trends.Under the supervision of the Radiologist and a RVT, to performs vascular exams such as venous, peripheral arterial, carotid and mappings.
