Job Overview:
As a Hemodialysis Technician, you will provide direct patient care under the supervision of an RN, perform hemodialysis procedures, order & stock supplies, disinfect/ clean RO system, jugs & machines and perform environmental safety checks of the unit.

The 5-Diamond Patient Safety Program was developed as an innovative training and recognition program to assist dialysis providers in increasing awareness and building a culture of safety among patients.

Prepares the patient station and hemodialysis machines, dialyzers, appropriate lines, and dialysate bathRecognizes and corrects problems involving dialyzer leaks or defects in arterial or venous linesObtains and records patient weights on the dialysis treatment record, pre- and post dialysisInitiates and terminates hemodialysis treatments according to policy and procedureResponds to alarms and makes appropriate adjustments during treatmentsDemonstrates clinical competence in cannulation of vascular access, temporary/permanent cathetersMonitors and records vital signs according to policyMonitors the infusion of heparin via heparin pumpAccurately obtains blood specimens using the appropriate procedure and tubes.Provides a comforting and therapeutic atmosphere for the mature adult, paying special attention to maintaining modesty and providing for self-control in decision-making, as applicablePerforms necessary minor adjustments and repairs on machinery associated with hemodialysis.Maintains equipment informationRecognizes and corrects problems involving dialyzer leaks or defects in arterial or venous linesSets up flow-sheet logs for water testing and equipment maintenancePerforms water sampling and reviews results with the appropriate nurse manager Performs chloramine testing before each patient shift and documents resultsPerforms conductivity meter check daily and documents resultsPerforms monthly disinfection of R/O systemPerforms necessary steps to place R/O system on bypass and informs Nurse ManagerClean hemodialysis machines and chairs/bed with a bleach solution between patient treatmentsPerforms acid and heat disinfection of hemodialysis machines dailyPerforms chemical disinfection biweekly on hemodialysis machinesPerforms daily disinfection of bicarbonate tanks and bicarbonate jugsPrepares bicarbonate bath as needed per standardPerforms conductivity and pH testing of bicarbonate mixPlaces completed dialysis flow-sheet in the medical recordTake age specific vital signs correctly with proper equipmentIdentified age-specific patient safety issuesEmploys normalizing activities for the hospitalized child as applicableProvides a comforting and therapeutic atmosphere for the young/mature adult, paying special attention to maintaining modesty and providing for self-control in decision-making, if applicableCommunicates clearly and slowly with the elderly client, assuring understanding of instructions; orientation to environment and reporting of alterations in the sameProvides for modestly in the care of all patientsPerforms other duties as requested.
